$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ferretlover', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('zoidberg', ' ')But last night I freaked out a couple of close friends about it when I recognized they'll ignore the warning signs until the end, and absolutely refuse to think about the implications of vast increases in food and energy. Then I recognized the same things in myself, as of late, blaming speculators, making fun of 80 kg limits on rices purchases etc.

Quite a surprise when you discover something new about yourself, itsn't it?
That adrenolin rush when you jump from one plane of existence to another is a biggie.

Well I read a lot of dieoff.org and do read thru latoc regularly so its not a huge jump. It was disconcerting to recognize such a basic defence mechanism asserting itself even though I consider myself relatively enlightened about such issues. Only human I suppose. Wasnt nearly as disconcerting the first time I read latoc though! Its what brought me here.

By the way Mr. Savinar thank you for scaring the crap out of me.I appreciate it and still kinda resent you for it. I cant help it. Shoot the messenger, damn this human weakness.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mos6507', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', 'I')'ve noticed that one of the easiest ways to freak yourself out is to actually find someone who will listen to you talk about peak oil and related matters as much as you want. When your done telling them the whole story they're looking at you like "WHAT?", and you're actually looking at yourself the same way because you have been listening to yourself talk and you realize how awful it all sounds.

Have you actually found anyone who, at the end of telling them all this, actually accepts it right off and doesn't immediately go into protective denial? If so you must have one hell of a presentation.

Actually, I've had quite a few friends accept right off. In part, that's because I have a bunch of really great friends. On the other hand, I can honestly tell them that -- despite all the things our greater community still needs to do -- we pretty much live in a fairy tale given how prepared our area is already. Especially relative to the rest of America.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mmasters', 'Y')eah it is surprising, all that's happened recently has confirmed what I talk about all the time about how the insiders have control of the playing field. Though I've come to realize they have a higher degree of control than I had originally thought.

Do you work on the Street ?

Why, of course, dear. Would you like my homemade chocolate chip, or those cute little thumbprint sugar cookies with the raspberry jam in the middle? I have plenty of cocoa (having bought several of those 50 pack boxes at Sam's!).

Yeah I work on wall street, I'm more in the bows with the data machines though, not a trader or anything like that. Truth be told most the people in these places are rather dumb when it comes to the larger picture or having any deep understanding of the market (as most all the jobs in these places are focused towards a small piece of a multi-compartmentalized aspect of the company's business).

Anyhow, I may be on the street soon as more layoffs are coming. Might not be a bad thing as I've been thinking about taking a break and maybe a permanant one from NYC.

Ah, I use to have an office at 55 Water St and then at Merril Lynch's data center on Houston.

Thanks mmasters. At least you have a view from inside, so you can appreciate the depth of the madness :)

Domus, would you agree with his estimation of the state of the finance world ?

Interesting. I myself implemented trading systems for banks and funds in Sweden and Switzerland just when the stock exchanges went electronic. My impression was the same, the traders themselves have no clue. They are the same as the floor/pit traders in the manual markets. i.e. they just carry out orders from the runners. Behind them are always some team of analysts that have some idea, but anyone can be a trader. (Heard that in England they had a lot of former rugby players as pit traders, just so they could muscle their way through and do the transaction. )
