Co2 levels claimed to be highest for 650,000 years

Unread postby Ache » Wed 14 May 2008, 03:43:39

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')REEN campaigners yesterday claimed that building new airports and coal-fired power stations was an "unpardonable folly", as figures showed carbon dioxide hitting record levels.
Scientists at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii said atmospheric levels of the climate change gas had hit 387 parts per million (ppm), a rate higher than for some 650,000 years.

The figures published by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration in the United States also showed the annual average rate of level rises was 2.14ppm for last year.

Levels of in the air have been rising consistently since measurements began in 1958 at the remote laboratory in Hawaii, and experts say the rate of growth is increasing.

Politicians won't fix the problem, they didn't do anything over the last years. The only thing which can help us escape this mess is a big drop in oil and coal supplies and a financial crash.

The problem is that there are enormous coal reserves.

And the rate of increase will most likely be worse once we really start using those reserves.

China builds a coal-fired electrical power plant every week.

Germany is retooling existing oil-fired power plants to run on coal, because it is cheaper.

Britain is considering reopening coal mines as the North Sea oil fields decline.

South Africa produces about a third of their oil needs from liquefaction of coal.

The US has huge coal and oil-shale hydrocarbon deposits.

Wasn't it Stephen Hawking that predicted not only global warming but runaway global warming?

How much reserves of coal is there, compared to reserves of oil? What I mean is, just how much CO2 will we have added by the time all fossil fuels are effectively used up?

It's possibly Hawking may be on to something. Or is he just on something?

Nope.

It was Lovelock.....He thinks we are already doomed.

Both Hawkins and Lovelock have warned of extreme global warming scenarios. One is a journalist, the other a physicist.

Hawking not Hawkins.

Neither of them is a journalist.

Lovelock developed the Gaia hypothesis and was the first scientist to suggest the earth's atmosphere and climate are self-regulated by biological responses to physical forcing mechanisms. His "daisyworld" computer model was one of the first climate models. More recently he has written a book and spoken extensively on the subject of extreme global warming, and proposed technological responses. Hawking is a cosmologist best known for his theoretical models of black holes and has suggested the earth may someday resemble Venus.

Then I suppose that everything is ok then, the fact that CO2 reached NOW 387 parts per million (ppm) is inconsecuential. I guess that the 400 gigatons of methane locked in the frozen arctic tundra that will be set free when temperature goes up, is not of great concern either link. Or the fact that by destroying forests like the Amazon we are pumping more CO2 in the atmosphere, or that we are making the oceans more acidic link
No, nothing of that matters because: "One is a journalist, the other a physicist."
