$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Moped', 'I')'m new around here too, its scary how resigned some of the posters here are to PO occuring, I'm not completely convinced yet and I won't be until I see OPEC production decline, that IMO will be confirmation of PO, until then I'm a skeptic.

Peak oil will occur. It's just a question of when. The most optimistic analysis still puts it in the relatively near future.

Be a skeptic, by all means. But be an informed skeptic.

You may be saying it's scary how many people here are resigned to terrible events following peak oil, and that's a matter to debate.

But the only real discussion at this point is what the post-peak oil world is going to look like, because the low hanging fruit is gone.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Thumper', ' ')I count myself a masterful skeptic and will research the hell out of a subject until I find it's flaws.

Welcome. There are many intelligent people here (I learn a Lot!) so be prepared to defend your points, to listen to the responses, to add to the wealth of knowledge, and to occasionally join in the chuckles (lots of gallows humor at times).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Thumper', 'W')ell, it's nice to finally join a group of people that understand and are thinking of how to deal.

Also, be prepared to suffer occasional bouts of depression and the odd nightmare. At least you were able to find The place where others do understand.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Thumper', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', 'I')'m waiting for a master skeptic.

Isn't FreddyH sort of a voodoo chart reader? His methodology is an averaging approach, right? It might even be that an approach like that will be wrong in every case, since there is no reason to believe that the mean or median of all projections has any special significance.

lol. I can see there are many debates to be had here. Interesting point though really. Where can I dig into the data provided to make these many projections I've seen. Who do I have to blame for my quickening fears that the downward slope is so sheer? Are there good peer reviewed papers and well documented statistics? or are we all just pissing in the wind with no clear "data"?

Point me to the right forum if you would.

Cog is here

Unread postby Cog » Sat 17 May 2008, 08:18:35

A little bit about me. I've been into survival prepping for around a year. This was as a result of an ice storm that brought down the grid for over 500,000 people.

To be honest, I've heard about peak oil in the past but never gave it much thought. I was always of the opinion, as I'm sure you have heard stated before, that there was plenty of oil out there. When the price of oil started spiking recently, I started doing some research on world supplies and reserves. The term peak oil kept coming up and the more I looked at it, the more I became convinced that there was some solid science behind this.

Although it annoys me greatly that I can not come up with a solution to fix the problem of peak oil or to refute the theory, I believe we can each do something to make ourselves more reliant and self-sufficient. The end of the oil age doesn't mean the end of life and I intend to cushion the blow in my life as much as possible.

Welcome. Good to see some people grasp the implications of supply interruptions early. Most just grumble "what took them so long?" when they are restored.

We're pickin' 'em up quickly, eh?

What if oil goes to One Fitty?

Figure then they'll be kicking in the Cyber Doors.

Hi Cog, welcome.

We had a bad ice storm last Jan too - same event maybe. It really helps to be prepped even though we were only down for 4 days I think, we were able to help some neighbors down the road who were down for over 2 weeks.

Thanks for the welcomes. There is a lot of good information here already and I hope I can in some small way offer some more in my trials and tribulations in prepping and gardening.

I do have some pics to post of my experiments in gardening. I noted that there is a size limit as not to result in page blowout. Does the forum software automatically resize them or should I do that myself? The other option would be to post them as links.

Welcome Cog from a former brick in the wall.

"The end of the oil age doesn't mean the end of life and I intend to cushion the blow in my life as much as possible."

This is a sound approach and like the way you said it. I may steal this phrase from you.

RE: Ice storms. When I lived in Redmond, WA we lived on a mountain and had regular occurrences of severe ice/snow storms that would knock out power for 3 or 4 days. These events (clear back in the 80's & 90's) turned my mind to the preparedness/doomer vein. Now the prospect and emerging reality of peak oil has me firmly and full time in the doomer camp.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('rumble', 'i') know that is a simplistic view, but what you are talking about just has too many avenues for me tonight. Hope you don't mind too much. You seem like you might get a little snappy about things.

Everyone is always snappy on this forum, seems to be inherent element of the crowd. Took me a long time to get used to, and to be honest, it probably is impossible to adjust to in the first place.

Most probably the PO-crowd is the most complicated to get settled since you either get burned in the process or you get elevated to somewhere else (mentally in the process that is - should you subscribe to awareness in the first place).

How many of us are here because we went out looking for solid proof to shut up those peak oil idiots, and utterly failed?
