I nominate George Carlin as the official Peak Oil website mascot. He has the essential persona - negativity.

Seriously, he is a brilliant man and he can connect the dots well, but he is lacks vision and faith.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vision-master', 'I')'m begining to think & believe Peak Oil is just another sign/ warning for the spiritual ones to prepare for the Purification, the coming of the Great Destroyer, the Rapture.

The time of the Sixth Sun.

I hear a very gentle sound, Very near yet very far
Very soft, yeah, very clear, Come today, come today
What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down
I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
I'm not sure I buy the god stuff but I have to agree with you about Morrison. That could be the high point of all rock and roll. Ride the snake baby.

Well, I stumbled into LATOC off a motorcycle site.

and now I have stumbled onto the 2012/ Planet X stuff. Like PO, one must do much research in order to ascertain a logical conclusion. I'm doing my research now!

Also, remember how one[s] the doors[/s] door  leads to another. The sign at the pump may be the sign in the sky.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ayoob', 'I')f George Carlin says it, it must be true. I trust standup comedians for all my scientific and financial news.

"Jesters do oft prove prophets." ~ Shakespeare, King Lear

I've often found it intriguing to contemplate the fact that amongst all other primates, the closest thing they exhibit to 'smiles and laughter' is a threat response.

As far as Carlin is concerned, he's probably the sharpest tack in the whole damn box (Bill Hicks was a close second)...

Here's another adage I picked up somewhere along the way attempting to understand people:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dunewalker', 'A') comedian's material has to come from his audience. If they don't understand what he's talking about, he flops. So, comedians reflect the common consciousness of their audience. To crack a peak oil joke requires an awareness on the part of the comedian that the audience is aware of peak oil. So this is significant, as Hagakure says.
Actualy there is a British comedian called Robert Newman who has had an entire tour dedicated to breaking the concept of peak oil too who ever will listen. It even made it onto UK TV. It is occasionaly posted on here. It explicitly sets out to tell people what they dont know.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '.')..but it is another sign of impending recognition, a very scary phenomena. That's when fear/rage hits the masses, mobs form, and "leaders" play their cards.

impending recognition... That must be a new peakoilism. A good way to put it. Fear, rage, determination, sense of purpose. I think any and all of these will manifest. And, I don't think it will be equally distributed.

George talked about what would happen if the lights went out and how prisons would not be able to function. He loves scaring the hell out of audiences in a sick humor sort of way. Always been a huge fan!

Prisons have big back up generators, armed guards and razor wire fences. Power goes off and cells are locked down automatically.

I would enjoy talking to Carlin. He says he doesn't see it ending well. I don't see it ending at all. Life is a constant struggle, its humorous and tragic. Pretty much everything he says I agree with but I guess I don't end up in the same place.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') figured out years ago that the human species is totally fucked and has been for a long time. I also know that the sick, media-consumer culture in America continues to make this so-called problem worse. But the trick, folks, is not to give a fuck. Like me. I really don't care. I stopped worrying about all this temporal bullshit a long time ago. It's meaningless.

I agree, dino. The quote is from his website. He may be right, but I don't feel that life is meaningless.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'T')he guy is voicing very deep fears and laughing about it. I guess people find that empowering or something?

Like I said... threat response.

When chimpanzees (for example) are confronted by a predator, rival or similar threat, their response includes actions such as baring their teeth ('smiling') and hooting and screeching ('laughing'). Such actions often intimidate an enemy into retreating.

I strongly suspect that the human tendency to laugh and joke about dire situations is nothing more than an elaboration of those instinctive responses, an attempt to intimidate and drive off the threat. Belittlement and laughing dismissal is, after all, a common response to bearers of 'bad news' (as I'm sure anyone here who's been preaching the peak oil gospel for any length of time can confirm). So yes, it is empowering after a fashion...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'T')hat's interesting TWilliam. Laughter does have a very aggressive demeanor. Bared teeth and raised eyebrows? Just like a chimp or baboon. Good observation. Really good.

Pstarr I would almost bet that were you to carefully observe the initial emotional response you have to a situation that elicits laughter, you would detect at least some element of apprehension. It's often very subtle and fleeting, but the more I've observed myself, the more I've noticed it's presence. Even the act of smiling at a stranger, if you think about it, is really a subtle attempt to diffuse possible aggression on their part...

I suspect the quality and demeanor are different. Humans often make noise accompanied by facial contortions during sex as well, but I doubt many people would equate them with smiling and laughter. Show just about anyone a face-only video of someone laughing at a comedian and then one of someone in the throes of orgasm and I doubt they'll have any difficulty identifying which is which...
