$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('RainShadow', 'H')m... oil as a false god. Honestly, there's something in that metaphor that bothers me. Living here in the Theocratic States of America, I hear it too f*cking much. There's always a pattern to it. And it never ends well.
"Want science taught in school instead of creationism? Then science must be your god. Want clean water and breathable air? What are you, some kind of tree worshiper? Build an economy based on cheap oil? Well now, oil must be your god.
"You my heathen friend, need a solution. Your false god is failing you. What you need is the One True God, who will swoop in and refill the wells with abiotic oil, pour down rains on the crops, and hold up bridges and roads with miraculous godly goodness.
"Conservation? Local agriculture? Sacrifice my lifestyle? These things do not interest me. I have faith in the One True God, who promises success and ponies to his faithful. Anything else sounds too Environmental. Too leftist. Those things are also false gods to me."
A theocratic personality cannot see an issue without seeing someone else's false "god." It might be a good way to start a conversation with some people about oil. Those people, however, are nuts.
Just a cranky doomer's $.02
Huh, that is a pretty darn good point.
