Does any one here thinks oil/gas price might level off soon,, I was hopeing that when the price of oil drop last week that this was where it might level off for a month or so but that looks as if that is now over,, I dont know about you folks but I own a service buisness here in Vegas and have 4 full size vans on the road and my compony gas and personal gas bill is running close to $3000 a month,, cant charge much more to my contracts because they are starting to cut back as well,, every one has its limits on gas price and mine looks as if it is around $3.75-$4.00 per gal,, after that its all down hill for my business.. I guess I will have to get use to earning and living on less from here on out...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Atlantean_Relic', '
')As someone who missed out on the seventies how long were the prices this high before thing started getting messy?

All I rememebr about the first one is my parents freaking out when gas zoomed all the way up to $0.50 per gallon. The second time around even odd filling became the rule and people had to wait in lines for quite a while to fill up on their designated day, and a lot of stations ran dry now or then due to restricted supplies, which fed into the topping off every few days phenomenom. There was actually just as much gasoline as before rationing began, however it was stored in peoples vehicle tanks instead of at the gas stations huge tanks.

I fear this time around there will be genuine shortages where less gasoline is availible at any price.

Tanada,
I remember daddy telling about how gas went from 40 cents to 70 cents "overnight." I don't know if it was literally overnight, but in his mind, at least, it was fast. I was a kid in the 70's - don't remember anything about the economics.

Of course I do remember things like the fact that we didn't have AC (nobody did) and we slept at night with the windows open. It was the mid-80's before everyone had air conditioning. We didn't get new clothes at the beginning of the school year. We got them at Christmas. Everyone had a garden. We had 3 TV channels on a TV you got up to change. We lived with hand-me-downs and make-do's and it was normal. Not a hardship. Everyone lived like we did.

I think the adjustment this time around will be much more difficult for those who have grown up with a false sense of credit-fueled affluency. My poor nephew who is turning 21 this September is having a REALLY hard time taking this all in. He's slowly coming to realize that everything he grew up with will be much different as he gets older. Just wait till the masses in general come to the same conclusion.

I'm prolly a little older than you because I clearly remember the oil embargo and the chaos it caused.

As for the rest of your post, dead on as a description of life for the just-above-broke segment of society in the '70s. Amazing how things have changed re: TVs, etc.

I really think that the US change to metric. $1.20 a liter sounds much nicer - isn't it?

Why do that, we can just change to Hexadecimal and pretend we are computers. Thats $1.6C per gallon if I did the conversion correctly.

I don't remember it being that bad. The 70s had a lot going for it compared to today, at least as a kid growing up. Television was much more wholesome back then. And the mid 70s? Star Wars, Atari 2600, Space Invaders, Battlestar Galactica. It seemed like progress chugged along pretty well in the 70s despite high gas prices. So I don't think you can really infer what PO will be like based on the 70s oil crisis. It's just not completely analogous.

Because it's an open standards and it's nicer.

Actually computers use binary not hexadecimal... althought computers may use decimal, so 1 hex bit (4 binary bits) is used instead of bytes (8 bits).
