Hmm, all I need now is a home suger refinery, and a stand of beets, or suger cane, and I'll be totaly independant.

'Hi Mary, could I borrow 10-12 pounds of suger, I ran a little short'

I love the bit where they figure themselves a threat to the oil companies. I wish there realy were some black helicopters to take care of entrepenures like this...

Sugar...another biofuel.

And just like ethanol, we aren't allowed to import the cheap and efficient stuff on the global market.

Thanks sugar lobby!

Sugar lobby? I thought it was the corn lobby preventing cheap sugar from reaching our shores? Thus, the HFCS in just about every damn thing you can imagine. :-x

this is for the old retired people with bank accounts larger than their IQ's

The quote" "The same amount of gasoline burns 8 times more carbon is not only just wron, it is stupid.

to make BTU's you have to break X amount of carbon bonds and turn to CO@

equal carbon footprint except for the faact the tractors prior burned carbon making the sugar...

large joke.

ethanol is always more expensive nd larger footprint in total than gasoline for the smae BTU output.

Yep, totaly agree.

$10k for the unit, that buys alot of normal gas, even at 5 bucks a gallon.

10-12lbs of suger to make one gallon(6lbs) of ethinol. I assume 'angels share' and water are where the other 6lbs go.
100-120lbs to fill yur(small) tank. Hmm.

Decenteralized electricity generation makes sense, decenteralized fuel refining realy don't. Economy of scale...

Hopefully the bad rap that biofuels has gotten lately will put these dude out. I hate seeing people waste time on this kinda thing.
Not that I ain't wasted time on things near as stupid.

Makes for a sort of EROEI primer though. Consider the numbers involved:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ow he thinks that he can, thanks to his partnership with the Silicon Valley entrepreneur Thomas J. Quinn. The two have started the E-Fuel Corporation, which soon will announce its home ethanol system, the E-Fuel 100 MicroFueler. It will be about as large as a stackable washer-dryer, sell for $9,995 and ship before year-end.

I'm going to get two!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')-Fuel has bold plans: It intends to operate internationally from the start, with production of the MicroFueler in China and Britain as well as the United States. And Mr. Butterfield is already at work on a version for commercial use, as well as systems that will use feedstocks other than sugar.

Wait a minute - the $10K model isn't for commercial use...?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')or starters, sugar-based ethanol doesn’t look much cheaper than gas. It takes 10 to 14 pounds of sugar to make a gallon of ethanol, and raw sugar sells in the United States for about 20 cents a pound, says Michael E. Salassi, a professor in the department of agricultural economics at Louisiana State University. But Mr. Quinn says that as of January this year, under the North American Free Trade Agreement, he can buy inedible sugar from Mexico for as little as 2.5 cents a pound, which puts the math in his favor. While this type of sugar has not been sold to consumers, E-Fuel says it is developing a distribution network for it.

What is inedible suger? Has it got mouse poop in it or something?
'Cause, If I realy need suger for my coffee, I am willing to overlook a little mouse poop.

If I put 10-14lbs of suger in my coffee in the morning, I could probly push my car to work. How many freeking calories IS that?

My understanding is, inedible sugar is the raw stage before all the impurities are seperated out, not table sugar which has been contaminated.
