An Open Letter From An Oil Exploration Insider

I saw this article on the front page, and it appears that peak has arrived. According to this article, we are now on the downslide of Hubberts Peak. It appears that the "OH SHIT!" alarm has been ringing for some time now. :( I didn't expect it this fast.

[i]I work for a major international oil company, in the exploration area. Peak oil is a fact – we are all on the back side of the bell curve.

While this is true, it might be better to term it the “Cheap-Oil Peakâ€

Too early to say if we are at peak or not. When we will know, this will mean it is just history.

But news are converging. In the 70's, people talked about a peak in 30 years. Then few years ago, it was in 10 years. Now people talk about just few years left before peak. And it seems that we see the first articles about peak is NOW.

I would very very surprised if we do not face a major oil supply problem before the end of the decade. For sure before 2015.
Not mother tongue. Sorry for the mistakes.

But it isn't as if we haven't been getting hints all along, is it? The prices keep going up and are volatile, just as predicted. Mr. Simmons gives strong hints that he believes Peak is here. The airlines are failing. And we see nations around the world trying to get into position to hold onto the last of the oil.

I guess the encouraging part is that we have several years before things get nasty. The author suggests 10 years with some luck. Frankly, that's more time than I had dared hope. 8)

That's some juicey stuff right there. Good article. Sounds like the guy is a rig manager or somewhat higher level. I used to work on DP drill ships, and thats the kind of details they delt with.

10 years?

Not quite how i'd put it, but so true. I see the arguments in this Letter as killing off discovery as providing any hope of delaying production peak, even if the oil is there (which i don't think it is).

10 years? In your dreams. Me thinks conventional oil production peaked > 1 year ago, +nonconventional will peak by 2010 absolute latest, maybe now.
