curiouser and curiouser cried Alice...hmmm...

The local big box store is out of bottled water (the whole aisle) and low on rice (of course). Plus, the community net forum has a bunch of housewives chit-chatting about stockpiling rations.

I understand the rice, but what is up with the water?

Besides that, it is a bit weird to see housewives chatting about stockpiling nonperishable food items.

Of course, there was more than one mention of Y2K with the added statement of how the media tends to "blow stuff out of proportion".

Rising Costs Force !1 Store into $1.25 Store
April 24, 2008
EAST LYME, Conn. -- Call it a sign of the times -- dollar stores have become the latest victims of a struggling economy.
A dollar store in East Lyme was recently forced to become a $1.25 store.
For seven years, Neil Hoelck, has been able to keep the price of most things at Dollar Express at $1. He said that he has been fighting a losing battle. …

To be fair, Y2K was a Windows-only bug that should have being patched quietly and quickly by engineers. It was something "blow out of proportion".

But food is essential... this "rationalizations" are denial of the seriousness of the problem.

PStarr is closer to the truth about the Y2K problem. It was for the most part a problem with mainframe computers and embedded systems and NOT an MS Windows problem. Back in the days when I worked on mainframes (before 1980) computer memory (internal and storage) was very expensive (A mainframe with 2 megabytes of memory could easily cost $2 million). Every byte of information that could be encoded in shorthand was. So we had a special date field that used what was called a julian format, that is YYDDD, which was a 2 digit year and a 3 digit day. This could even be stored in 3 bytes. So it was used everywhere. The problem being that when the year turned to 2000 you had a date of all zeros which would totally screw up date compares. I remember bringing up this problem when I was at Lockheed and was told not to worry about it as the "system will be rewritten long before then." Well of course it wasn't, there or at countless other companies.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('zensui', 'I')t was something "blow out of proportion".

Y2K was a "non-event" because people like me spent much of 1998 and 1999 rewriting vast amounts of software, performing monstrous number of tests, and having a very busy Jan 2000 mopping up the things that slipped through the net.

Nobody ever remembers the day the lights didn't go off.

I don't know about that, honestly. I recall the New Year's Eve 1999 and sighing with relief when the world continued on as usual. I've never felt so thankful for computer programmers.

As for the rush on rice, I'm not anymore stocked up on anything than what I usually would. We're a family of five so I usually buy in bulk anyway and keep emergency stuff on hand. So, I find it mildly entertaining that so many neo-June-Cleaver types are talking about stocking up and the dearth of rice in the local big box.

I have to thank them for providing inspiration to us to resume our morning runs, however. My oldest and I usually try to run a mile or two around 5am each morning, but we slacked off during winter.

You know, for once I agree with you. The economy is tanking and they need people to spend. So what do they do? Tell everyone they might not have food in the future, and everyone goes out and buys food. And survival gear, and ammo, and all sorts of crap.
It's gotten insane.
