$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')We now think that people with naturally high levels of leptin receptors may not gain weight as rapidly over time as people who have low levels of leptin receptors," said Dr. Unger. "It could explain why some people can eat more and do not gain weight." To test this hypothesis, the UT Southwestern researchers used genetically modified rats in which the leptin receptor remained present in large quantities even during marked overfeeding. In normal mice, the high-fat diet caused massive obesity with enlargement of fat cells to almost three times their normal size. In mice with the forced overexpression of the leptin receptor on their fat cells no obesity occurred, even though they too were fed high-fat, highly caloric diets.

"The fat-storing function of the fat cells requires the disappearance of the leptin receptor," Dr. Unger said. "This is done in order to block the action of the leptin fat cells produce."

May-Yun Wang, lead investigator and instructor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern, said the transgenic mice's high levels of leptin receptors caused all surplus calories to be burned rather than stored.

"They were overfed tremendously and did not get obese. Our control animals were fed the same diet and gained an enormous amount of weight," Dr. Wang said. "If we could prevent the disappearance of leptin receptors in people who overeat, they would likely not gain weight after overeating."

If it isn't obvious, you aren't paying attention.

Genetics don't give you an excuse to sit around and eat McBurgers with McMilkshakes without taking a walk around the block every now and then.

I just hope society puts a stop to this victim mentality bullshit and prevents obese people from becoming a protected minority group.

You guys are ruining the transition to the drug pitch for the latest pill that is going to save all the helpless obese that are victims of genetics. If pharmaceutical companies don't flood the media with their pseudoscience advertising, the diet and exercise luddites might gain some traction in their market.

Yeah, being overweight is a disgrace. Those dang fat slobs need to get some exercise and go on a diet. I wonder how THEY feel about it. Like I said, why is one of my brothers over 400 lb? I can out-eat him. Besides, he's a better cook. I'm lucky to fry an egg. It's like all those WEAK smokers that need to quit! Same as drinking, it will kill ya buddy.

Why fit people dislike the obese
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')ONDON: Overweight people are often bullied and discriminated against because ancient fears that fat humans may be diseased causes their thinner counterparts to dislike them, say scientists.

In a study, reported in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, the researchers have found that the mere sight of someone who is overweight can trigger feelings of disgust and nausea similar to encountering rotten food.

Since bacteria and viruses are invisible, human brains have evolved to react to outward signs of disease like rashes and wounds, and these signs also include excessive body fat, suggests the study.

"Antipathy towards obese people is a powerful and pervasive prejudice in many contemporary populations," the Daily Mail quoted the team from the University of British Columbia as saying.

"Our results reveal, for the first time, that this prejudice may be rooted in multiple, independent mechanisms," the research team added.

The study showed that feelings of disgust towards the obese were strongest in people with the greatest fear of disease.

Addicts in general irritate me. I don't care if it's junk food, crack, cigarettes, sex or whiskey.

Stop playing the victim card and take responsibility for your actions.

If you have a genetic predisposition towards addiction, it doesn't mean you have an excuse to be addicted forever. Some people have a genetic predisposition towards anti-social behavior, that doesn't mean we should tolerate their criminal activities.

The real problem is that some people use drugs, food, tobacco, etc. to cover up real psychological disorders.

Instead of treating their depression or anxiety disorder, they overeat.

We all have different kinds of body builds. Not everyone can look like a marathon runner or a weight lifter. Some people are just BIG, just like my dog. One look at her and you would think, man what you been feeding her. She's just a 100 lb dog and that's the way it is.

In the WWII, there were no fat Jews in the camps.

Eating too much may be genetic.

Or it could be social.

Price of human fat

Unread postby IslandCrow » Fri 20 Nov 2009, 02:54:52

After reading endless posts about solvent green, and treating them as a 'doomer wet dream' I just came across this on the BBC:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')our people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing dozens of people in order to sell their fat and tissue for cosmetic uses in Europe.

The gang allegedly targeted people on remote roads, luring them with fake job offers before extracting their fat to sell it for $15,000 (£9,000) a litre.

I think that this would be a good reason to keep thin!

Relevance for PO discussion: fat is a hydro-carbon.

Babies treated in the womb for obesity

Unread postby Sixstrings » Mon 02 Apr 2012, 11:30:12

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')img]http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/04/01/article-2123700-0F3DA26400000578-216_634x456.jpg[/img]
Overweight mothers-to-be are being allowed to take diabetes drugs to treat their unborn children in the womb to prevent them being born obese

Babies treated in the womb for obesity: Overweight mothers-to-be get diabetes pill to cut the risk of having a fat child

If the strategy is a success, the treatment could be in widespread use in as little as five years, with tens of thousands of overweight but otherwise healthy mothers-to-be drugged each year.

The Daily Mail recently revealed the rise of the 'sumo baby', with the number of newborns weighing more than 11lb soaring by 50 per cent over the last four years.

More than 15 per cent of pregnant women are obese. This raises their odds of dying in pregnancy, of their baby being stillborn and of a host of pregnancy complications, some of which can be fatal.

Big babies are around twice as likely to grow into overweight adults, suggesting obesity and the lifetime of ill-health it can bring is 'programmed' in the womb. The trial involves 400 pregnant women in Liverpool, Coventry, Sheffield and Edinburgh.

They have started taking metformin, which has been safely used by diabetics for decades and is cleared for the treatment of diabetes in pregnancy.

I'm not clear on how this works.. how does a diabetes pill *prevent* obesity? I always thought obese people had diabetes because of the obesity (eating too much starch, blasting away their body's insulin regulation), not the other way around that diabetic meds can prevent obesity in the first place.

Anyhow.. when is peak oil getting here.. folk are gettin' fat! 8O

Well it's just sort of interesting. We talk about peak oil doom and people starving and growing potatoes in the yard to survive on -- when the reality is that people are getting so fat that apparently it's now necessary to medicate unborn babies to prevent them from being born obese.

Obesity in general, I don't get self-righteous about it because there are a lot of factors -- Southern / rural cuisine that was meant for a time when people did very hard physical work. Also medication is a huge cause, there are so many meds that screw with insulin *and make people fat* it's not their fault. Probably corn syrup in everything is to blame too. And affordable food is all starch but nutrient poor, so people eat a lot of it.

But when it comes to medicating infants in the womb.. this is going too far.. it's time to think about WHY people are so overweight and address that.. or put the damn fork down, *anything* other than medicating the fetus.

Interesting piece from npr, once again the low carb eating plan works better for weight and waist loss and comenserate health improvements.

Investors see fat profits in US obesity epidemic. See what they did there ?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')ome 84 million people in the U.S. struggle with obesity, a growing trend. In 2012, 35 percent of adults were obese, compared with only 14 percent in 1980, according to a National Health and Nutrition Survey. And estimates point to a larger girth in the future. Globally, more than 500 million people are obese, according to the World Health Organization. That number is slated to more than double by 2030.

"Diet and exercise aren't effective," said William Plovanic, medical technology equity research analyst at Canaccord Genuity.
