$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tyler_JC', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('firestarter', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mos6507', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('firestarter', 'G')o back to pre-civilization and you get a life expectancy apprx double the 1769 number. Throw out infant mortality and it's even better. Guess which lifeway is more sustainable?

If pre-civilization was sustainable, we'd still be doing it.

Gee whiz, you're a hard one to please, especially given that pre civilization hung around 99 times longer than civilization has.

Civilization is merely a bump in the road. For better or worse, it's run is almost at an end. Buckle up.

How do you define civilization? Is it just agriculture?

If you think we're going to abandon agriculture...wow.

I hope we abandon it willingly, but I doubt we will. Either way, nature will force the issue--geology will also (ever heard of peak oil?). In the interim we can incorporate permaculture as a palliative as we go forward in the post peak world.

As for how do I define civilization? Many ways: division of labor; surplus labor; agriculture; the existence of the state; non egalitarianism; massified man; non tribal living; technophilia......

There are several features that define "civilization."

Agriculture, or rather, deliberately growing food, is not limited to civilized societies. Lots of folks practice/d food growing.
