Want some salt with that 750 FICO?

Unread postby roccman » Tue 22 Apr 2008, 02:07:55

So ....now that the world is being tossed into Starvation Pit...

Do you regret not buying more food even if it meant:

1) trashing your credit cards
2) running the risk of BK
3) running the risk of foreclosure

Looking back - it was all business for me.

Really - why hold onto a FICO -

Really - why?

Being hungry hurts...

Starving is an awful way to die.

Well...I'm pretty into my FICO right now because I want land.

Far as I can see, having someplace that you can live without somebody charging you rent is the top of Maslow's heirarchy. Yeah, I know. You never own land and the government still tells you what you can do with it, but I rather deal with zoning and property taxes than landlords.

Fair enough.

Question

Do you feel slightly behind the eight ball?

Banks are not lending. They don't care about your FICO.

RE is dropping.

Farmland is increasing.

Do you think you can get a piece of land in this environment?

And how much food have you put away per person - 1 year ...3 ...5

The land you want to buy could be years away from producing enough to feed you...let alone anyone else.

1 acre of land per person per year.

How many are you?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('roccman', 'D')o you feel slightly behing the eight ball?
Yep. Doing the best I can. Maybe I was born under a bad sign. Maybe things will hold together a while and I'll be fine. All you can do is what you can do.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')o you think you can get a piece of land in this environment?
Not today. No down payment. Also I'm about 9 months out from a BK, though my FICO is pretty decent. In a year, yeah.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd how much food have you put away per person - 1 year ...3 ...5
Right now? Maybe a month. I'm moving to Seattle within the next two months and I'm trying to avoid buying big bulky stuff that I'm going to have to carry around.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he land you want to buy could be years away from producing enough to feed you...let alone anyone else.

Granted. Hope for the best. Try to prepare for the worst. Realize that the best and worst prepared, over the long run end up the same place. Dead.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '1') acre of land per person per year.

How many are you?
I are one. I think that one acre thing is pretty vague. There's plenty of places in Montana that you couldn't support yourself on 100 acres without water rights. My tentative goal is ten acres on Vashon Island. We'll see how it turns out.

'Sup Rocc?! Weren't all the non-hoarders supposed to have starved to death by now?

Anyway, I have about $40 to last the rest of the month so I can't afford to buy a metric ton of white rice.

I do have 15 jars of Trader Joe's raw crunchy almond butter. Strangely the price went down recently from $5.99 a jar to $4.99. With the price of almonds what they are I have no idea how they pulled that one off.

I was worried they'd discontinue the raw + crunchy variety so I wanted to stock up just in case. You know how they're always changing they're stock around.

Also I live across the street from some goats. And I have a few pounds of salt. So when TSHTF I can round them up, salt them and dry them in the sun. The smell might attract the neighbors though.

But regardless I'm not staying here in California. I'm moving back to the tri-state area where we can stay with my girlfriend's mom for free. Also I have better work prospects in New York, being out of work sucks. It makes one feel like less of a man. I suppose so does starving to death but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

So how's it going Rocco? How are the kids?

I have to question the diachotomy.

OK FICO and I will just describe our preparations as "enough."

We are working at reducing our debt, it may take a year or five to roll to the point that we pry open the reserves, need to be able to keep the plates in the air as long as necessary.

Searching for the golden mean in all things.

Shun the non believers....

Kids are great Narz...thanks for asking. My son just got his ham lic yesterday...and my daughter is growing into quite the rebel (fine with me...)

Me - well I jumped off the train months ago about when I talked with you. It was time to decide to perish in the city or snap up a farm and grow some food...you know what I decided.

The FICO is dead and buried.

The food is ample, but still growing

Trees in the ground, rabbits growing, goats giving milk, chickens about to lay eggs, worms on their way, and bee hives still on drawing board.

Job is good...and I hope it can weather the storm loong enough to outrun the first wave.

You sound good.

Keep well.

We bought a small farm just over a year ago. It needed and still needs work. We're building a chicken coop and the chicks will be here in mid May. We have goats but need to buy a milk goat. Our goats do nothing but eat and crap. They are both pets and lawnmowers. Just ordered some apple trees since the nursery in town had two trees left - and for 109.00 each they can keep them. The garden is a container garden this year. It is all heirloom seeds so I can save some for next year.

On the food .... we're left over Y2Kers. Penny pinchers too. It makes for bulk purchases and lots of rolls of toilet paper. We don't horde food Big Brother (if you're reading) we collect! Love the pretty packages! There are four of us -two toddlers and two adults and one paycheck. So we save where we can. Currently we could live off what we have for a week no problem.

Better to have it and not need it immediately than to need it and not have it! :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('roccman', 'S')hun the non believers....

But which ones? :-D

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('roccman', 'K')ids are great Narz...

I sure hope so cause I'm going to be stuck with one in three months.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('roccman', 't')hanks for asking. My son just got his ham lic yesterday...and my daughter is growing into quite the rebel (fine with me...)

Congrats.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('roccman', 'M')e - well I jumped off the train months ago about when I talked with you. It was time to decide to perish in the city or snap up a farm and grow some food...you know what I decided.

Trees in the ground, rabbits growing, goats giving milk, chickens about to lay eggs, worms on their way, and bee hives still on drawing board.

Congrats again.

Personally I hope your fears are way off since I'm probably going to move back to the tri-state (heavily population) area. My GF's hormones are kicking in and she wants to be near family. We're both underachievers and broke though she is getting some training that could be lucrative in pretty much all non-hardcore-doomy (even very bad economic) scenarios.

My parents have 5 acres in rural Connecticut (town of about 2,000) but there place and property is convential and hardly equipped for any hardcore trauma to the system.

Believe it or not though they are probably more peak oil aware that most people. A friend of my dad's friend runs this site : http://www.energyinvestmentstrategies.com/ (acknowledging peak oil) but he's dying and somewhat cynical and apathetic so he's not too worried. We don't get along very well otherwise I'd probably move up there (and when he's gone my mom will probably get lonely, being alone for basically the first time in her life and let me come help her out there, especially if the evidence of the collapsing economy becomes undeniable). Mentally I'm doing as well as can be expected under somewhat stressful circumstances (long story but we got promised work out here in friggin' Ojai and the people we were to be working for we're totally disorganized, they misled us, pretty much went broke (they were living beyond their means) and are no living on their boat (1 guy, 2 wifes [for all intensive purposes] and 6 kids). Truth is stranger than fiction but I'm not going to go into details lest I get them in trouble (even though they screwed me and my GF over bitterness isn't really my style).

So we're stuck out here in a shitty sterile little apartment complex. I do have some tomatoes and cukes growing out in pots on my concrete balcony (hardly survival material but I like growing stuff). I'm surviving only cause I'm getting money for being a certified basket case (though how long that'll last is these economic times is anyones guess).

I want to get back East before the price of gas makes it all but impossible but my GF wants to give birth here (well, away from her mom anyway who is going to stress her the fuck out). Then she wants to intern in Santa Barbara with this lady who offered her a job (as a colon hydrotherapist, helping this sick society become somewhat less full of old compacted shit, one client at a time, it pays well anyway and the training only takes one week).

As for me, I know how to keep sane cause I know how bad depression and other self-inflicted misery can be but I wouldn't say I'm doing "well". But at least I'm not lying to myself.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('roccman', 'Y')ou sound good.

Keep well.

R

what's a FICO? Shouldn't you use a more international name? Isn't it a pension plan?

Vashon is a pretty cool place....I've got a funky beach cabin there.

Hope you get your 10 acres---house and land prices haven't come down much in the Seattle area, but then they never got as high as those in California.

I'll take my FICO and food.

Big Red is one thirsty bitch. The one on the right runs a lot longer on the same amount but doesnt pull nearly as hard. In fact, the disc we run on the Case we run 2 behind the bigger.

Farm country. Just aint nothing like it anywhere. One of my best childhood memories was cutting wheat on this field right in front of the bins. Now the reasons you dont normally see combines moving at night is due to the humidity. When the wind stops blowing the crops absorb a bit of moisture from the air. Gets tough, makes it a real bitch to harvest. Some evenings though with a gentle wind to keep dew from forming and keep the crops dry, you can run real late.
We were cuttin this field and it was one of those nights. We had 3 combines and a few trucks running. I was maybe 8 or so, I couldnt tell you for sure. Anyways, a big harvest moon low on the horizon filled the sky while I sat on top of the grain truck watching the combines slowly move through the field. One would fill up and crawl over to the truck to unload.
Man, just aint nothing like farm country.
