What type of afterlife existence would you design?

Postby Jack » Tue 22 Apr 2008, 02:03:38

First off, this is intended to be completely frivolous. Let us carefully avoid any serious exploration of religion.

Second - this is not about what you believe or expect an afterlife to be, but what you would design if you had the choice.

Third - if you don't believe such things exist, that fine - but the point is not what you believe, it is what you would design if you (you, personally) had the choice.

Fourth - no, you don't get to design anyone else's afterlife. Just yours. You can design your afterlife to include friends and family, but it's purely their choice whether they wish to join you.

I'll post my own ideas after I see whether the thread gets any interest. 8)

Am I god designing this afterlife to live in, or am I me designing this afterlife to sell other people on my religion?

I always thought Valhalla would be a cool afterlife!

I think my ideal afterlife would be reincarnation. I enjoy my life. It definitely has it's down times, but how would you enjoy the good times otherwise? I enjoy the challenges and the story.

Heaven sounds to me absolutely dreadful. Blissed out sitting on a cloud spending eternity kissing the ass of god. Vomit!

Tell me about Valhalla.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smallpoxgirl', 'A')m I god designing this afterlife to live in, or am I me designing this afterlife to sell other people on my religion?

Neither. Let's suppose you lie down one night, and some defect of health kills you instantly. Something, Somewhere, gives you a choice of how you want to spend eternity. It can be anything you want, with any parameters.

You can choose cessation of existence and oblivion. Or mile high palaces of gold in the clouds. Or a log cabin on the surface of a neutron star. Anything at all. But once you choose, you're stuck with it.

And you choose for you, and you only. Not for anyone else.

Something similar to the current existence but with fewer mean people and less expense dairy products.

Actually, cheaper butter would probably get rid of the mean people rather quickly by itself (mean people have high blood pressure, eating lots of butter would push them into heart attack range).

So...basically the world as it is now but with free dairy from the sky.

Hmm...that might be a little too hard core for me. I do have my cuddly moments.

I guess actually I would say that my ideal afterlife would be the area where I grew up(southeast US) but before the Euros showed up and trashed everything. I'm not into solitude so much. I'd want to be able to hang out with my friends. Hunt. Roam the woods. Garden. Fish in the creek. Dance. Cuddle a lot.

Let's not kid ourselves here.

You and I are the 19th and 23rd most prolific posters on this forum. We've been posting for nearly 4 years with no apparent end in sight. Our post counts are well into the 4,000 range.

There's no way this isn't cutting into our normal human interactions.

Heck, alone for all eternity might not be a dramatic shift from the status quo.

Oblivion, pure and simple.

All I wish for is sweet oblivion after I pass away.

For those of you opting for reincarnation, all I can say is that you must never have experienced the extreme suffering that comes with mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder/severe depression/chronic insomnia etc., because if you had there would no way in hell that you would wish to even give yourselves the remotest chance at a life of such. And statistically speaking, if you were to reincarnate indefinitely you would eventually be reincarnated into an individual that was genetically susceptible to mental illness. Then the tinder would be there, waiting only for an unfortunate life event to light the match. Have you ever seen a person who doesn’t shower, doesn’t eat, can't sleep, only rocks back and forth crying incessantly whilst mumbling to themselves?

Also you could be reincarnated in zimbabwe, which in itself is a further disincentive for such

Hunting and gathering, stalking the the green forest edges,
waiting for quarry, my senses alive.
My family and kin at home among the sedges,
all waiting for supper, my time to arrive.
Hunted and gathered, stalked by anothers sharp claws.

~ Living the life of a hunter/gatherer as all my ancestors did from time out of mind...earth resplendant with few of our species in small clans, part of the flow, living, loving, never worrying about what the next day brings...

No - if you choose something that lots of people also choose, then you would be able to interact with them.

So, HEADER_RACK chose Valhalla; I suppose others would make the same choice. They could all hoist their horns of mead together.

HHHmmm... some kind of large log cabin-type lodge in some very green foothills; a stream closeby; the ability to telepathically communicate with wildlife; the ability to speak, read and write in all known languages; a magic computer where I could look for something and only find truthful facts; family and close friends with whom I could discuss ideas, or, just sit on the wide porch silently; no time-keeping devices;
