$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('zensui', 'T')his isn't meant to "darken more" this discussion but I have thought and come to conclusions about this.

Basically for almost all net accounts but peakoil.com, they're basically a digital legacy. But with the peakoil.com accounts something more should be on consideration. Tracking who is dying where because of what when TFSHTF... maybe with a google (or other) maps of death.

I doubt even a small fraction of the posters on this forum are at risk from the dieoff.

And on what assumptions do you base this belief? And I'm refering to T(Flamming)SHTF not TSHTF... possible extinction of homo sapiens.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', '
')I think for many people the reality of how they really feel about things is never clear to them because they never have occasion to really talk it out, and if necessary defend beliefs that may be more irrational than they thought.

A forum like this is really a marvelous tool for self-understanding, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Some are. Others seemed to already have some axe to grind and are now just hanging their hat on Peak Oil as a convenient excuse to tie it into their agenda. These people are more interested in hearing the "amens" echoing back from the pews on these ancillary issues than they are in defending them.

I concur. Many of the posters here are better prepared, pyschologically, to "hit the ground running."

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ludi', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tyler_JC', '
')I'm talking about the serious discussion of what happens to our digital history (forum posts, myspace pages, etc.) when we die.

All the stupid embarrassing things we said are there for posterity. :)

That might be all I leave behind. If I die tomorrow, someone will likely come onto this board, look through some old threads and think to themself, "FreakOil is a real a**hole!"

I'd better do something decent soon.

Just in case I do die tomorrow, I just want to say that everyone on this thread so far, I would be happy to call a cyber-friend. You've all enriched my life with a little bit of wisdom, good humour and new insights. Thank you.

Now maybe that someone will look at this post and think to themself, "Maybe FreakOil isn't such an a**hole after all."

-I thought about this some. If I were to get hit by a car while jogging tomorrow, none of the people I have cared for, and been in a community with for the last four years would know the difference until the following Wednesday, when the Weekly Petroleum Status Report comes out.

At least we have kind of a collegial bond, maybe at some level emotional. I would much rather the people of PO.com know I had kicked the bucket, compared to some of the cretins I have worked with in various actual jobs over the years.

If I were to die, this entire forum will know. I am writing a script in C++ that will automatically login and post my death notice. I am still working out the technical details on how the C++ script will know I am dead. But, I will figure out something.

I gave my password/username to my roommate. If I die, he's supposed to post a message in the open discussion forum.

Depending on how I die, it might be in the Hall of Flames. 8)

You could put a requirement in that you must input some information every couple of weeks.

When you fail to do this, the message will pop up. There's a delay, of course, but it's better than nothing.

If the death notices unfolded anything like the expert tags, it would probably turn into a big joke pretty quick.

Tell your family to make sure your actual name is spelled correctly in your local paper obituary notice and have the program watch for your name. Simple.

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Sorry, Tyler,

You said a couple of posts back on this thread that very few people on thiis forum were at risk of the die off. I've been out and am three sheets to the wind.

Jayraymondson,

Not particularly charismatic I would say.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', 'I') know that I have gotten to know myself much better through discussing things here. Often, you don't know how you feel about something until you actually articulate your feelings as part of a discussion. Most real world discussions are too full of posing to really dig into things in a meaningful way. Not always, but often.

The group of minds that gather here would never cluster in any other setting because it is too hard in the real world to identify interest in topics discussed here with much efficiency or precision. I know a lot of people, but I have no idea who most of them REALLY are.

Also, most real world discussions about doom, peak oil, and subtle problems with our beautiful industrial eartholopolis, even good ones, are at the basic level compared to some of what is discussed here. It's as if all of the introductions and background are unnecessary here. You can just hit the ground running.

I think for many people the reality of how they really feel about things is never clear to them because they never have occasion to really talk it out, and if necessary defend beliefs that may be more irrational than they thought.

A forum like this is really a marvelous tool for self-understanding, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

This might count as a spam post, but that really resonated with me.

The long version of "seconded" or "quoted for truth". :)

But then on further thought, even as a long-time forum participant of many different forums, most (all?) of the really meaningful discussions and conversations I've had have been in person or at least real-time, in phone or on instant messenger. It has a less scripted, more raw feeling -- and if you HAVE done the self-understanding bit prior to the conversation, and the other person has as well, some really amazing stuff comes out of it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Devin', 'B')ut then on further thought, even as a long-time forum participant of many different forums, most (all?) of the really meaningful discussions and conversations I've had have been in person or at least real-time, in phone or on instant messenger. I think the older you get, the fewer in person "meaning of life" conversations you have. Part of it is you have more things on your plate when you get older, a lot of people just stop caring about that kind of stuff once they get distracted by a career and family, and others just don't have occasion like they did when they were in college or other school to be around people who are having a lot of different ideas thrown at them every day who want to talk about it.

But I can talk as well as I can type, and I still have the occasional real-time mind-meld, and it's usually totally unexpected.

You just gotta be ready when it comes.

One of the things about forum exchanges that are handy, though, is sometimes I need an hour or a day or longer to really digest something I have read and respond to it, and that's hard to do when someone is sitting across from you waiting for a response to their last comment.

One of the things I love about this place is it's got the most interesting bunch of people I've every encountered. And for the most part they will give you a clean fight. It reminds me a little of big time table tennis where the players are SO intense, and yet if the official misses a call, the player may give his opponent the point. I love that.

Here's an example. Check the comments if you want to see how intense people can be about table tennis.

Excerpt from comments:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]japanesexxx: no matter what bullshit u say, Liqin IS THE MAN. nowadays everyone is getting doped in order to be a champion. Liqin is a lighthouse for younger generations. enough said

DonAntonio91: ....suck my butthole, he just did what he thought he had to do and every good sportsman would have done this. But maybe everybody is acting a bit too overloaded, he just did what he had to do...

ttvig: Wang Liqin is a great figure for the sport of table tennis.

aznballer145: thats inspiring

Herizona: omfg so awsome and insane
