Has anyone ever had a good forum buddy who died?

This has got to be one of the more unusual emotions in today's world. You likely feel an intense and yet vague sense of loss, because it was probably a person you never met face to face, never talked to, never saw, and yet you may have felt incredibly close to them still.

I certainly share a lot more of myself here than I do most anywhere else. In the real world, the conversations just don't unfold on quite the same level as they do here (to put it mildly).

My sister-in-law passed away a couple of years ago unexpectedly and she was very active on several forums (not this one) and her husband had the unpleasant task of logging on to the forums she frequented and leaving a message that she had died. That may sound like a dumb (or dark) thing to do, but at the same time I understood how he felt--that the forum relationships she had were important to her, and letting the people on the forums know what happened to her just seemed like the right thing to do.

Maybe I'm just morbid but I think about that too.

If, God forbid, one of the regular posters were to die...would we ever find out?

Would their inbox just fill up over time and their threads be slowly pushed off of the front pages into obscurity?

If I die tomorrow, what exactly would happen?

People would wonder why I stopped posting. RGR, 128shot, Shadizar, Bas, and others would wonder why I never talk to them on PeakSpeak anymore. MrBill would wonder why I'm not helping to moderate the Economics forum. And so on...

And yet online, forever, would be thousands upon thousands of my inane ramblings on this forum. My member quotes would be circulated and people would wonder, "who was that guy?"

I was just thinking about this tonight looking at a friend's facebook. He passed away almost a year ago and yet people still frequently leave him messages on his wall. His photo albums, favorite activities, and personal information are permanently visible.

In the future as more and more internet users die (from the die off or non-die off related deaths), what happens to their electronic mausoleums?

Photos fade, memories fade, everyone who knows you will eventually die but your facebook profile or peakoil.com posting could be around...FOREVER.

How does society deal with that?

Interesting thought, but when I die people will just go about their daily routine. I provide occasional comic relief and notorious bad spelling and grammer.

*serious note

Each person makes their mark in their own way, but each persons mark is only as deep as the quality of their life and the messages that they left behind. In some ways; this forum, facebook, myspace, and others provide a digital historic document, stating that you did exist and that you touched certain people along your way.

While most of us will not be studied in some history textbook or discussed in the halls of academia, the occasional pearls of wisdom and knowledge that we had, will still be available to the masses. At the end of the day, forums like these will provide for some form of legacy for those that posted, and maybe in time we will come to realize that while we may not be as important to study as a President or some stupid debutant celebrity, what we discuss here in this forum may provide useful to those that come after.

*seriousness over

Just wait till they get to golems posts though

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', 'I') will digress here a little and ask if anyone has ever had a good forum buddy who actually died?
I'm guessing that Lorenzo died. He was very sick he told us. Maybe Schweinshacks died too.

Very interesting -- because I had been thinking about this lately, too. As Tex mentioned regarding his sister-in-law ... it has become one of the unique and new parts of "handling the details" after a death ... going on line to the dead person's forums, e-mail, etc, and notifying cyber-friends/acquaintances of the death.

My husband and I don't share our e-mail passwords with one another ... just the way it is. Maybe we ought to consider higher level of trust, and share those passwords -- "just in case" we ever have to do such notifications, God forbid.

We don't have one another's forum passwords, either. But it would be easy enough to log on to forums under my own user name ... and announce the news of his death, and that (unbeknownst to others on the forum) we were married.

Of course, I don't keep track of all the forums he is on -- and he doesn't keep track of mine. But at least on Peak Oil, we could let you know the news if either one of us were to die.

However, we really can't afford for either of us to die, since this getting the farm place ready for the kids/grandkids is a more than full time job for us, plus the guy we hire for about 15-20 hours/week.

So don't expect anything in the near future with regard to our deaths. ;-)

On the other hand, we just watched an old Twilight Zone DVD the other night (Netflix) -- about this woman who lived holed up in an old building for years, never going outside for fear that "Mr. Death" would show up and grab her and take her away. He did show up one day, but she couldn't believe it was him because he appeared in the form of a (then) very young Robert Redford. So she let him it. It all worked out cool. But I ramble ....

The point is none of us knows when Mr. Death will arrive for us -- regardless as to how NOT done we might THINK we are with our jobs here on this earth.

Wow ... that WAS a ramble.

It is much easier to not be concerned about the demise of people whom one does not know than it is to be worried about those whom one does know.
There are many posters here whose death would sadden me deeply.
So, Don't die anytime soon. I have enough problems to deal with at the moment!

I hear that, Ferretlover! Okay, I won't answer the door if Robert Redford knocks ;-)

Hey here is a question -- what do we all call each other ... not name-calling. I mean, are we cyber-friends? That implies knowing more about one another than most of us do. Cyber-acquaintances? That's a little unwieldy.

Maybe I should start a new, fluff-thread, and take votes as to this "very important question" ;-)

PS - Seriously, though ... now the question is bugging me.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('MrBean', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jasonraymondson', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('patience', 'I') tend to think that the problem children who offend me will make enough problems for themselves. They don't need any help. Those that don't listen to reason aren't worth the effort to try to communicate with. But a well reasoned debate is a learning experience, so even the worst of us can stimulate that.

My Dad said that no one is a total loss. They can always be useful as a bad example for others.

That would be me :-)

I allready like you. On my life raft there is allways room for a pitifull village idiot with good loser attitude and many shamefull loser stories to share, stories that would make me feel better about myself if I included my self on my life raft. :)

So that concludes my answer to the thread question: everybody else but jasonraymondson. Jasonraymondson to father the new tribe of men!

Is it alright if I split this thread?

I feel like we can't have a serious discussion and a joke discussion in the same thread, especially about a topic like this.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread...

I don't mean the serious question of who we want to kill off. That's the joke discussion.

I'm talking about the serious discussion of what happens to our digital history (forum posts, myspace pages, etc.) when we die.

The hijacking was a group effort, I think.

And by all means please split this discussion out into a new thread about the nature of forum relationships.

And thanks to Mmasters for bringing the topic up sort of indirectly.

I know that I have gotten to know myself much better through discussing things here. Often, you don't know how you feel about something until you actually articulate your feelings as part of a discussion. Most real world discussions are too full of posing to really dig into things in a meaningful way. Not always, but often.

The group of minds that gather here would never cluster in any other setting because it is too hard in the real world to identify interest in topics discussed here with much efficiency or precision. I know a lot of people, but I have no idea who most of them REALLY are.

Also, most real world discussions about doom, peak oil, and subtle problems with our beautiful industrial eartholopolis, even good ones, are at the basic level compared to some of what is discussed here. It's as if all of the introductions and background are unnecessary here. You can just hit the ground running.

I think for many people the reality of how they really feel about things is never clear to them because they never have occasion to really talk it out, and if necessary defend beliefs that may be more irrational than they thought.

A forum like this is really a marvelous tool for self-understanding, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Lumpy', 'H')ey here is a question -- what do we all call each other ... not name-calling. I mean, are we cyber-friends? That implies knowing more about one another than most of us do.

Free of the concious or subconcious labeling process, IMHO, we know a lot about each other. Little details, here and there, may be outside of our individual "box," but, I think we are alike in many ways and that concept leads to personal improvement and friendships.
I tend to think of many posters here as being in the "favorite cousin" status--person for whom I am Very fond, with all that implies, in a totally Non-sexual way.

This isn't meant to "darken more" this discussion but I have thought and come to conclusions about this.

Basically for almost all net accounts but peakoil.com, they're basically a digital legacy. But with the peakoil.com accounts something more should be on consideration. Tracking who is dying where because of what when TFSHTF... maybe with a google (or other) maps of death.
