"Origin Facts" label for products?

Unread postby emersonbiggins » Thu 10 Apr 2008, 14:52:39

Well, I've had an idea for some time about an "Origin Facts" label, the design loosely based on the ubiquitous, bland and yet, informative, "Nutrition Facts" label, commonly found on consumables in the U.S. This label would list all the tangibles and intangibles (in US$ terms, of course) of the cost of a product, up-front, allowing the consumer to directly compare and contrast which products provide him with the most benefit per externalized (societal) cost.

Here is a rough template:

I realize that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to assign a dollar value to externalities, but comparisons between industry averages, and/or a "carbon content" column would make some sense. --On our way to the carbon tax, and I'm leading the way!

And, no, I am not normally this boring.

I think this is a fantastic idea, actually. Easier said than done, of course.

It would certainly help intelligent people make intelligent purchasing decisions. However, most people wouldn't have a clue what the information means.
