If it ever quits snowing here, I'll post some pics. The deer are in tough shape. The turkeys are getting frisky, but it's going to be a week or ten days before last weekends foot of snow goes away.

The Suge-monster in his peach orchard.........eatin' grass.

Highlander, snow can be beautiful, post a pic. I would love to see photos from your part of the country any time of the year. I may go turkey hunting this weekend, the boy got one last year and I baked it wrapped in bacon with a mushroom/drippins' gravy. It was delicious. There's a spring right off my NW corner that sees all kinds of wildlife.

Thanks for posting those.

I'd post some, but we still have snow up here in Canada.

if you look close enough you'll see orach that sprouted in the last couple of days. I was given a ton of seed for free and had no idea what to do with it so I planted a bunch. It seems to be doing fine.

Rhubarb is fighting back after being wiped out by the slugs last year during it's first year. Once established it should be unstoppable.

Those are great pics strider. Where do you get the seaweed, from the beach I imagine, but what kind is it, what do you look for, and what are your observations on what it does for the plants?

You will love your Asian pear! We routinely get bumper crops of the juiciest pears with little maintenance. They keep for a long time and I've made great apple-like pear sauce with the excess.

Garlic is one of my favorite plants ever. Stick it in the ground in Oct., notice the growth in the spring, pull it up in July and plant some overwintering veg.

I really like the rhubarb, too, and want to do asparagus. Perennial food sources rule.

So does spring!

So much living in the southwest. It's been so goddamn cold here that we still have snow on the ground in the shady spots - what little we got this year. and when I tried to turn over the soil in one of the raised beds I hit solid ice - after a whole day in the sun.

25F last night. 50F and windy as hell today. I am SO DAMN SICK OF WINTER.

It's not the frog, it's the door that apparently leads into Dracula's crypt, or one of the lower levels of hell. Two words; wire brush and fresh paint. (make that four words).

You are God Stryder. My mouth was watering looking at all those fresh sprouts, I couldn't help but imagine all those FRESH sweet yummies squirting their life-giving nutrients into my.....this is sounding pornographic. I didn't start anything indoors this year. Everything direct sowed outside last week, I'll have to see what happens. I'm thinking about going out into the rain to plant my seed-taters right now.

The seaweed comes from the beach which is about a 5 minute drive from here. If you look in the raised beds picture you can actually see the ocean through the trees. I don't go to the beach right close by as it's used for shellfish and doesn't tend to get a lot of seaweed built up on it. Most of the stuff I collected is what we grew up calling eelgrass. It has a little bit of salt(which the asparagus love/need) and a crapload of nutrients in it. It dries to a crusty white coat that no weed will push through. Lots of people around here dig it into the garden in fall to breakdown by spring. I've never seen anyone else try it as mulch.

Potatoes should go in today if I get a chance. This years flu bug has hit hard. I've been pushing along feeling like I'm dying for almost 2 weeks now.

Your dirt looks nice and dark Stryder, strawberries and asparagus are my two big must start, for this year. I had bad bug issues with peas first year, didn't try them last year. My harvested heirloom beans didn't do squat last year after bumper first year, luckily I had a bunch of the original beans still left in the envelopes to plant.

That is awesome beyond words that you can see ocean from your house, and it appears your high enough to escape any GW sea-level rise.

I'm going to direct sow everything this year and keep my fingers crossed.

The dirt is amazing. I freely admit I bought it and had 10 yards trucked in last year. It's a 50/50 mix of high end top soil and something called seasoil which is similar to really really good compost made with seaweed. It's amazing stuff. I had to go with a 50/50 mix because pure seasoil is too rich for most veggies for the first few years.
