Flying a 1000miles for dinner...

Unread postby frankthetank » Sat 05 Apr 2008, 10:14:01

So yesterday i heard a story about some people that a family member is friends with. Combined family wealth (inherited from dad) probably in the top 5 here in the state of WI.

Once the youngest was done with school, they flew a 1000 miles out to Montana, ate supper, and flew a 1000 miles back (they have a Cessna Citation business jet). I hope it was good.

Heres the kicker. One business jet wasn't enough, they leased another out of Chicago so more people could go!!!

They spent more last night in dinner costs then i make in years. I will say they are very nice people and very generous.

Flightaware confirms all of this, so it did happen.

Anyone else heard of stuff like this?
Anyone else have stories like this?

I don't know anyone that rich.
Do vacations count?
My parents-in-law flew to Holland for two weeks (there now). and my bro-in-law & wife went to Africa for safari for three weeks last year.

Back in the '80s my cousin dated a young man from a wealthy Phillipino family. The family would fly to Paris or NYC to try out a new restaurant.

One of my wife's co-workers just flew from Los Angeles to New Jersey to run a half-marathon with her mom. She left last Friday night, ran the race on Sunday morning, and was back in L.A. Sunday night.

I grew up in a POOR family. We had nothing, so my life now is considered luxury to me. When i hear stories like this is just boggles my mind. We had one big station wagon for the whole family. A trip was going up north fishing in a little junky boat. Funny thing is, we were happy with it.

I think money makes things easier, but doesn't make life any more fulfilling.

We once met this gay-couple in one very nice Virginia food-dispencer, who flew in from Vermont for the dinner. They were at the next table and my wife made a compliment about one's cologne, so we got our bill paid for ( around $700 with the tip )

A guy on an Australian rules football team I used to play for in Toronto flew to London to play a game of American Football for an amateur team. I guess that's not as bad as just flying for a meal, but still shows what a crazy age we live in.

Perhaps it will be a bit flamy to say so, but that $700 dinner ( >100 ounces of silver ) was well worth it, unlike many $30-40-50 dinners we had. I'd fly there every week if i was rich.

I worked for a company for 2 years as the head of the web development department. It was a decent gig, until thing started drying up. Now my boss wasn't rich, but his parent were loaded. (hundreds of millions) they came down and flew us back to chicago to eat. We ate at a place if i remember right called Everest. I just remember the prices where holy crap. it was a french restaurant and I had I think it was called Wild Pheasant Breast Alseace Style. or some crap like that.

For the four of us, the meal was a little over $5000.00 including wine and desert. I remember he left a $1000.00 tip

We stayed that night in their freaking mansion, and a mansion it was. The bed room I stayed in, was bigger than the house I grew up in.

Then they flew us back the next day.

Do you know if that restaurants hiring?

I once paid £1 to get a bus 400 metres down the road because my bags were heavier than me. I thought that was plain lazy and a waste of money... How the other half live eh?

I'm serious about that restaurant...

i guess its the wine mostly. The place i was talking about had 10000+ bottles, a good half of them were above $1000 each, the most expensive one was $14500 before tax&tip. it was something from 1903. They had madera from 1860s, con'niak from 1920s, ets.

I've always had this interest in how the "other half" live.

That boss was pretty cool to do that for you. That would have been awesome. Its always cool to be able to do things for others.

I've always wanted to order one of those Lobel's steaks. $130/lb... I bet these rich people would grind it up into hamburger.

I have some insight into the other side of the rich coin.
My Uncle is a multi-millionaire ( no idea of his wealth beyond that), me, sis and Mom spent some summers with his family in the keys, big house on the water, boat, etc., when it came time for us to fly home he would give my Mom a bill, he kept track every year of what the three of us spent, to the dime. Just restaurants and stuff where he would pay for us up front, we were never charged for lodging and home-cooked meals. I'm not complaining, sounds fair but the point is my Mom was single and struggling and he could have easily treated us and never felt the pinch.
He also built a HUGE mansion in Vale about 7 years ago and he had his 1970's era Mercedes driven out to him, this is the same car I saw him driving when we visited in the 70's. This isn't some rare, extra valuable collector car, it's a standard one that's been his daily transportation for 35 years.

Well that is how the rich get rich. Poor people are generally far more generous with their money, and this why they are poor. Me included.

Good point, I'm always reminded of the biblical story of Jesus at a temple, with the rich man flashing his cash to donate to the temple and the poor person giving a few coins. The story was as true then as it is true today. I've always found well off people are tight as hell and will leave you dangling off a cliff if there wasn't anything in it for them. The poorer someone is the more likely they are to help you out, even if they don't know you, decent people.

My Uncle was my absentee, deadbeat biological dads, sisters husband.( I'm thinking this is an uncle since I was told he was an uncle?) And he was completely self-made , started a construction business and owned apartment buildings.
