Projects scheduled to be completed in 2009 include the Pearl GTL plant in Qatar and the first large scale BTL plant in Freiburg Germany. Both currently under construction.
GTL also known as Syndiesel and BTL, marketed in Europe as Sundiesel, are basically the same fuel although derived from different sources. Both can only be used in Diesel engines.
In 2006 the auto racing world saw a milestone when an Audi Sport running on Shell GTL won the famous 24 hour endurance race at Le Mans, France. GTL, developed by Shell and curently produced at the GTL plant in Malaysia is widely used in the civic transport industries of China and other Asian nations. Some is also sold in Europe. It is derived from natural gas.
BTL is derived from Biomass including waste wood, pruned wood and agricultural crops.
German CHOREN Industries is building the world's first large scale BTL plant following the success of there pilot plant in Frieberg. The Sundiesel will be sold mostly in Europe due to rising demand in Europe for diesel fuel ( the majority of new vehicles sold in Europe are Diesel)
Shareholders in CHOREN include Volkswagon, Mercedes Benz and Royal Dutch Shell.
