Apple's Safari browser makes this forum ROCK!

Unread postby Zardoz » Thu 27 Mar 2008, 03:20:30

On March 18, Apple released the final (or "first stable") version of their "Safari" browser for Windows. I just heard about it and downloaded it from here:

http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

Yes, it's free, like iTunes and QuickTime.

I've been using it for about an hour now, and I'm utterly amazed. It is unbelievably fast, at least for me.

You know those annoying delays we've always had to put up with on this forum? Forget it. They're gone with Safari. I've been zooming all over this place for the past twenty minutes, and it hasn't hung even once. It's so much faster than IE and Mozilla it isn't even a contest.

It's the same on every site I've been to so far. I showed it to my son and he hit several sites that are notoriously slow, and they all loaded almost instantaneously. He's shocked.

God knows what the Apple elves are doing, but this browser appears to be a whole new ball game so far. The web pages even look better!

Here's the Wiki page on it. I haven't studied it at all:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_(web_browser)

I've been treating it abusively, frantically clicking on every link I can, as fast as I can, opening thirty or more tabs at a time, trying to make it stumble. So far it's easily taken my best shots. I'm seriously blown away.

Ya gotta try it, folks. It's really something.

(Caveat: We have a super-fast 4 meg cable connection and my computer is a dual-core AMD 4000+ with 2 gigs of DDR2 ram and a fast video card, so your mileage may vary.)

No, Zardoz. You make this forum rock. Just got it. Works [s]pretty[/s] very well, [s]but[/s] and my laptop isn't even that fast; a few years old and very beaten up (by me). It had me hooked when kitcosilver came right up and it usually takes a few seconds. Thanks

Yes it works a lot better.

It'd be nicer if there was a Linux version...

Yeah, as long as you run the programs they want YOU to run and pay for, soon to be a percantage of every click and browse,, like a good sheep, everything is fine. Big sister.

There is, it's called Konqueror. Not as pretty, but Apple is working with the KDE folks, sharing code both ways between Safari and Konqueror.

Opera pretty much owns on any platform when it comes to speed, tho' I generally use Firefox because I like the huge amount of extensions available for customizing it to suit my needs...

I prefer Safari's rendering of fonts. But this is actually a feature of Mac OS X; fonts look the same in Firefox and Safari under Mac... and there are better and more fonts on Mac.

It's carried over to Windows, as well. The fonts, and the graphics, look better in Windows with Safari than they do with IE, at least on the three comps I've put it on so far. I'm as impressed with the way web pages look in Safari as I am with its quickness.

Any spyware thrown in?

Apple's QuickTime/iTunes automatic updater is about the most irritating bit of code I've ever installed.

Doubt if I would want to do without all the Firefox extensions. Site's fast enough for me as is.

Somebody ought to put a sticky on this thread.

I just installed Safari and I really like it.

I feel like I'm working on a Mac.

Does it have anything similar to the Adblock plugin for Firefox?
