The NHL thread

Unread postby gampy » Wed 26 Mar 2008, 21:03:02

Any hockey fans here?
With the approach of the NHL playoffs, I thought it might be nice to have a thread for this.

My two main interests in one forum. Hockey and The End of the World.

Ottawa Sens fan here.

Who is cheering who?

Is being a fan of such an energy intensive form of entertainment incompatible with being a peak-oil aware individual?

I'll be moving to Ottawa in August, and am an evolving Sens fan. I think that my distaste for the Toronto 'Make-believes' will always exceed my support for the Sens, however.

I don't see how being a fan of pro sports is incompatible with being PO aware. I believe it humanity is pretty much bound to burn up every bit of fossil fuel we can economically extract, it's just a question of the ends to which those resources are devoted. Pro sports diverts fossil fuels that would otherwise be going to population increase, or supporting a lifestyle based on sprawl, so it isn't necessarily a bad thing IMHO. All that fuel used up in flying pro athletes to and fro makes gas for suburban Joe more expensive, and discourages the proliferation of that dead-end lifestyle.

That said, pro sports facilities built in downtown cores and with good access to public transit are much preferable to the likes of Scotiabank Place, (the Ottawa Senators home arena) built way out amidst suburban sprawl, inaccessible by public transit, and surrounded by agoraphobia inducing parking lots.

Inevitably pro sports will not be feasible in its current format. I think we'll see sports become more localized, and probably revert to a semi-pro format within the next 2 decades. I'd be in favour of that. The athletes would actually have a community connection to the team they're playing for, as opposed to the current mercenary system in place in pro sports.

Lol, thanks for playing.
Yeah...Ottawa has been plagued by piss-poor urban planning for decades. Another city doomed to become a suburban nightmare.

I don't hate the Leafs so much, just their fans. Haha. I grew up in Ottawa, and just gravitated towards the team. Before Ottawa got their franchise, I was a Habs fan.

Fuck man...they have had a rather weird season this year. 13-0 start, then the wheels came off. Goalie controversies, and coaching change.

I think they will have their shit together by the playoffs, though. Their win against Buffalo the other night was heartening. Down 3-1, and then came on gangbusters in the the last 10 minutes to destroy the Sabres.

Montreal is another interesting story. Wow..who would of thought Montreal to challenge for top seed in the east?

Huge Blues fan. I am hoping for the #1 pick overall so they can take Steven Stamkos. It's a lottery system and they are going to finish in the bottom 5, so you never know. The Blues are loaded with young studs. They are ranked #1 for team prospects. Bright future ahead for them.

Aye. Stamkos.

It is supposed to be a weak draft this year, Stamkos notwithstanding. Although 1st round picks don't always pan out. Scouting, development, and having a good farm team (with good coaches) can go a long way to building a champion.

The Blues have suffered so much the last 10 years. Hopefully their new crop of youngsters can make the team into a contender. I think Chicago is in a similar place. Lots of good young players, just need to drop some dead weight in the next couple of years.

It's only been a bad three years for the Blues. They broke their 25 year making the playoff streak then. Also, this is supposed to be a strong draft. Stamkos, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Hodgeson, Wilson, Bogosian and the Russian Fitatov are all going to be great. Beach is going to be a stud too, if he gets his head screwed on straight.

The Blues have two big time studs that will be ready this coming year, TJ Oshie and Swedish Patrik Berglund. TJ is compared to Roenick and Berglund is compared to Mats Sundin. Both are absolute studs. Add them to Erik Johnson, Brad Boyes, Stempniak, Brewer, Backes, Jackman and the Blues are loaded with top end youth. Tkachuk and Paul Karyia need to retire soon and they will have mega cap room.

Does Kariya have a NTC? I think that's the hardest thing for teams nowadays. Jettisoning their aging mega contracts. The cap situation will improve next year I think.

I don't follow the Blues all that much, I am a eastern conference guy.
But just looking at the standings, you just might get Stamkos, lol.

I think next year's draft will have a better variety of picks, Tavares, and a couple of goaltenders I think.

Wings look poised to take the President's Cup, which usually means a second round knockout. Unfortunately, I don't see two geriatric goalies getting us through the playoffs.

The Blues are a big , physical team with a few fighters, and it's funny watching the Redwings and Blackhawks run like pussies from them. They want no part of DJ King. The Redwings are way too soft to advance in the tough western conference.

I am pretty sure Kariya has a ntc. He was playing ok until the Blues fell out of it, that's when he starting tanking. Tkachuk just needs to retire. He has one more year @ 4 mill left. Karyia's 6 and Tkuchuk's 4 mill will come in handy in the very near future. I am glad the Blues extended defensemen Brewer and Jackman's contracts. The Blues are going to be a force very soon.

I've been a Canadiens fan ever since 1986, when they won the cup with Patrick Roy in the pipes. He was my childhood hero. I was a bit of a two-timer after he got traded to the Avalanche, cheering for both teams until Roy retired.

I live in Hong Kong now, and no one here gives a flying rat's ass about hockey, so I have no idea what's going on.

To be honest, professional sports are a little retarded. You cheer for a bunch of millionaires who don't give a damn about you, and the entire team is usually made up of players that even come from that town or even that country. It's completely arbitrary who you cheer for. I'm from upstate New York, but I like the Habs not the Sabres.

It's even weirder in football. I was reading an article about the English premiership the other day. One of the English teams has an Italian coach who speaks through an interpreter. Imagine having an entire English football team with players from all over the world and an Italian coach. How does he talk to the players? They've also got Chinese and Russian owners.

I remember watching sports movies when I was kid. ("Slapshot" is the best, followed by "Youngblood.") As we all know from those movies, giving inspirational speeches before a game is one of the coach's main jobs, but some coaches in the English premiership can't even do that because they can't speak English, and a lot of the players probably wouldn't understand anyway. What a load of bollocks.

My opinion on the draft: Remember Eric Lindros? He was hyped as the next Gretzky but that didn't pan out. Who knows what the new players are going to amount to. It's a gamble.
