"Now accepting euros"

Unread postby Duende » Wed 26 Mar 2008, 11:05:10

Walking around Washington recently I'm beginning to see "now accepting euros" signs in storefronts. It reminded me of study abroad trips to South America when any storeowner would accept dollars...

Is the US dollar/Euro relationship becoming like a Peso/US dollar? And then I saw this story, which confirmed my suspicion that it's happening elsewhere:

Now accepting Euros

What are we Americans to make of this?

Well, this just confirms the advice I gave my brother, who is about to start working in the US:

1) Open a bank account in euros, and transfer all your savings there, as soon as you can.
2) Apply for the Spanish nationality for his wife (he's Spanish, she's Japanese). In case he has to get out of there in a hurry, it's easier to get the first plane to London if both are European nationals.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Duende', 'W')hat are we Americans to make of this?

That you can only have your cake and eat it for so long. Sooner or later the bill comes.

Everyone *knows* what the problem is. No one has the political will to do anything about it, however.

It means that some Americans are playing the currency market right out on the streets. Never mind.

We Dutch have a saying in the Netherlands:

"Wie geschoren wordt, moet stilzitten."

One who is getting a shave, must sit still.

Concering the Eurodollar, I think we'll see a double top around 1.59 soon and then head back towards 1.45 as confidence returns that the crisis will be over within one or two years.

From where would such confidence emerge?

Those stories started hiting media about 1-2 months back and considering that Main Street is very poor in judgement I was expecting to see more of it on every TV channel every half hour telling you to sell dollars to buy euros, silver and gold, but it haven't materialize that... so only early stages of Tulip Mania for now...

And I would hate to be Louis Gallois
