It's a bad idea. It moves the cost to people who shouldn't be paying more. If I put 100 miles on the roads in a moped and you put 100 miles on the road in a tractor-trailer truck combo, we pay the same tax.

Not to mention the tax burdern falls on those that travel the most, who are already having to deal with rising gas prices, car payment, repairs, higher insurance etc.

And I think putting a "By Mile" tax on gas will automatically kick up the price of everything in California's economy, since it will be such a big price shock on Truckers. I think this one move might just put thier economy in a tailspin.

Taxing by the mile is not a great idea. It would be better to up the gasoline tax if they're worried about revenue. The lighter a vehicle - the less damage, less gas, less taxes.

Hybrid electric vehicles are still using gas to charge their batteries, and must carefully watch their weight.

When tractor trailers are using electricity from the grid we can figure out a different way. But even then it should be weight x miles or something.

And how exactly are they, (the fed), going to know how much I have drove in 1 year? Hell, I don't even know how much I drive, all I know is that I need an oil change every 2.5 mos. Since it averages out to 4.8 LOFs per year, I drive about 14,400 mi per year. and in case the fed didn't know, I ALREADY PAY TAX ON GASOLINE! If they pass a law requiring taxation by mileage, I will just purchase gasoline from my grandfather's pump.

The article says it would have to be combined with a GPS device in every vehicle. If you don't have anything to hide, you shouldn't object to the government being able to track you all the time!

The one thing a by mile tax does do is encourage people to drive less. The problem is only remotely how inefficient our vehicles are. More to the point is the overall number of miles ppl travel. This is what leads to congestion. This is what leads to sprawl. This is what leads to a Kunstlerian nightmare in our cities. One of the biggest steps forward we could make is to encourage ppl to drive less. So while the idea of a per mile tax w/ GPS units is pretty silly, the market encouragement behind it is not so bad.
