It seems price drops $4 it's a plunge and a new trend.

Price goes up $4 it's speculation and non-sustainable.

Price goes down, we can't figure out why and go silent, Media goes crazy.
Price goes up We go crazy, media goes silent.

Though we have had a lot more of media silence than our being silent :)

Sorry, I didn't see the "highest percentage in 17 years" part.

If it dropped $5 a barrel, isn't that about a 4% or so drop? Surely that isn't the largest percentage drop in 17 years.

Maybe it's because everyone's shifting the money to Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Lehman Brothers, Toll brothers, & Goldman Sacks. Everyone wants a piece of the next bailout. If executives don't get their pyramids, we all suffer.

Gold and silver are also down massively.

And the dollar is stronger.

Makes no sense on the back of a .75-point interest-rate cut, does it?

Traders seem to use such Fed moves as inflection points to take profits.

The stock market is down too---I guess they're taking profits from yesterday's runup.

But the trends are going to continue, I think. The same trends we've been seeing will just continue on, since nothing has really gotten better; in fact, conditions are even worse.

You hit the nail on the head. It doesn't make sense.

I wish I could run my business like the American Stock Market does. I could be aggressive as hell and know that the government will always be there to bail me out.

Alas, no amount of bailing would have stopped the titanic from sinking, just prolonged the inevitable.

You know, I'm no expert, but this looks like it might be a good time to buy precious metals. I don't see any change from a week ago, other than Bear Stearns is dead and there have been two more rate cuts.

A lot of this stuff is like a head fake for small investors. It's pretty wild how counter-intuitive the markets can be short term.

Maybe part of it (as someone mentioned above) is literally investors just jumping from PMs to financials because they think all the bad stuff is behind us now.

We'll see.

Makes sense that oil prices are going to undulate. Price spike leads to demand reduction leads to transient price drop. I've been waiting for a sustained drop since $40 a barrel. Hasn't happened yet.

The precipitous drop in metals is pretty mysterious to me, as is the dramatic rebound in Lehman Brothers stock. It was down to about 20 on Monday and is now back up in the 40's.

Institutional investors and hedge funds, may be liquidating commodities and gold to cover paper losses.

Also, a tip of the hat to deflationists who have called for an across the board drop in commodity prices if recession begins to go global. They may be right, we may end up with a '30's style depression, rather than a 70's style stagflation. I kind of doubt it, but it's worth considering.

Asset value declines....funny money dollar values? Is it perhaps because investors are moving their cash into their matresses.

Probably Lehman is up because the FED bailout on Bear Stearns assured the speculators that, if a big bank got into trouble, they would come to the rescue. Besides, with all those injections of liquidity into the financial system and rate cuts, the investors are feeling assured, thus, a "flight to safety" (investment in gold, silver, etc) is less appealing.

Depends on which investors you mean. The carry trade is still flying south.

I tought the increase in japanese rates had already put an end to it. BTW:do you think the fed rate cut will end up creating a carry trade of its own?

Oh, and remember that "investor confidence" I was speaking about? well...dow jones is dropping -293 as we speak. :D

I suspect massive I-N-T-E-R-V-E-N-T-I-O-N-S from central banks and money centers are ongoing. The stakes are extremely high and all actors will do absolutely everything they can to try to bitchslap the system to behave. Behind closed doors of course.
