I think for the purposes of this particular discussion we're talking about machines that run on energy such as electricity and liquid fuel. They all must eventually go.


I disagree.

Sure, dishwashers, curling irons, cordless drills and riding lawnmowers may go by the wayside, replaced by simpler devices or changes in lifestyle.

But for truly strenuous tasks we will not forget what we've learned due to our oil slaves. I've never worked a pit saw, harvested an acre of wheat by hand or split rail ties but I can imagine we will use what we have learned going forward.

There is a foundry still standing in the California foothills that built some of the first hydroelectric generators using hydro-power, wooden dies and old horseshoes for raw material in the 1850's.

You gotta go up to Sutter Creek and check it out.

The regrettable thing, to me, is that no car since the Model T has been equipped with a nice big PTO cam on the side. Drive your truck out in the field, set up a saw on a stand, and run a power transfer belt off the idling truck's engine. Specialized (this only does X, it doesn't do Y) machines suck.
At 1% annual growth, human bodies will incorporate every gram in the observable universe in approximately 10,170 years.

I have a neighbor who had a land cruiser/blazer looking thing (1980's?) that I know has a factory PTO on the front. Did you mean nothing has them or nothing has them on the side....

I could ask him what it is next time I see him.

I thought the Dodge Cummins diesels with the manual transmission had a PTO.

Drive your truck out in the field, set up a saw on a stand, jack up one drive wheel and block the other, put a bare wheel (with no tire) on the side in the air and run a power transfer belt off the idling truck's engine.

Specialization is believing the manual.
