I know there are supply pressures. But this is really beginning to look like another engineered commodities bubble.

Time will tell. But, if it is, and the commodities market crashes, that'll be the final nail in America's coffin. We will become a third-world country.

The latest runup in oil (from ~$90-ish) is, in large part, due to the tanking US$. In that light, it can't really be seen as being in a bubble (so much as a hedge against the dollar), though I have no doubt that hedge funds and institutional investors are making up $10-15 of the current price, IMHO.

Im sorry to be cynical but all the while the current price was still low all we heard was "still below the all time record after adjusting for inflation ... blah blah" ....this happens ...

" The price beats the inflation-adjusted high set in April 1980 although the two measures are not strictly comparable. "

like now that the inflation adjusted figure has been overtaken it doesnt actually mean anything .... that historical all time might well still be more .... its all in the calculation.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!

$109. 20 (Oil Prices Hit Record!)

Man changes prices at a petrol station in the US
The cost of petrol in the US and UK is soaring
Crude oil prices have hit an all-time high for the fifth time in six trading sessions.

New York sweet crude added $1.85 to touch $107 a barrel, before falling back to trade at $106.6.

The price beats the inflation-adjusted high set in April 1980 although the two measures are not strictly comparable.

The oil price is also being supported by last week's decision by producers' cartel Opec not to raise supply, despite rising demand in China.

Many analysts believe that traders are also buying oil, priced in dollars, to protect the value of their money against the sliding currency.

The dollar has been ticking off new lows against the euro and other key currencies since last summer, and was hit again on Friday by a US employment report showing the labour market at its weakest in five years.

This has prompted traders to seek refuge in commodities, including oil and gold, which are more likely to sustain their value than the greenback.

The 1980 comparo is old hat; that was beaten last week. I don't know why it's worth mentioning, IMHO.

falling back? looks like it is shooting backup toward 108 now. man that $100 psychological barrier was no joke, right? once it finally broke through it's been running at a gallop to catch back up.

good thing if you ask me.

edit: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. the line about the 1980 record is hilarious. when we were below the "inflation adjusted record" **cough** they were completely comparable. but now that that sham has ended all of a sudden they aren't comparable?

So when do the Federales start to make it a talking point for the Nov. selections?

I won't be able to sleep the night that Billary announces her plan to lower oil prices.

Don't look now, but it's hit $108. Dayum!

Seems to me the higher it gets, the higher the floor gets. $100 oil will appear a bargain, so it doesn't seem likely to fall much below that unless people really get spooked and start unloading everything...

I'm hoping Billeary or the Obamanation institute price caps, looking forward to the closed gas stations and supply shortages so I can get out more on my bike.
