$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Falconoffury', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')here are an estimated 50,000 slaves in the US, just for the sole purpose of sex. That doesn't include sweatshop laborers, illegals, etc.

Interesting. How is such a thing estimated?

Good question. My guess would be government and law enforcement officials taking a random sample of prostitutes on the street and finding out how many are foreigners, their names, ages, etc and cross-reference that data with missing persons reports that have been filed. Most girls in Eastern Europe don't come to the US to become whores, they are most likely forced (or tricked) into it.

You apply the same percentages with margins of error carrying over to girls from other nations that don't have such missing persons reports and get an estimate from that group.

Oh, and a correction: that's 50,000 enter the US every year. Most probably don't live too long in the US, so the actual figures are probably only a couple fold that number. Based off of '97 US government data. Other groups estimated higher world-wide numbers (don't know their US figures).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')OUAKCHOTT, Mauritania - Mauritania has passed a law promising jail time for slave-holders, an important step in the northwest African country's push to eliminate a practice that has quietly persisted despite a 25-year-old ban.

The law, adopted unanimously late Wednesday by the legislature, calls for prison sentences of up to 10 years for people found keeping slaves, along with fines for slave-holders and reparations for those who have been enslaved.

Human rights campaigners praised the law as a signal that a long-awaited cultural shift might finally be taking hold in Mauritania, where slavery has existed for hundreds of years and is ensconced in traditional proverbs, songs and poems.

But America is evil. The silence from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton is deafening.

Mauritania is a very difficult place. it doesn't surprise me that they only outlawed slavery 25 years ago, and it is still going on. The capital city is where the Sahara meets the sea. I used to be in the Peace Corps and I know that this is one of the few countries that had almost nobody ever sign up for a second tour. It's one of the hardest places on earth to live. Being a slave there must be really miserable. I think the ruling group there are the Moors that were kicked out of Spain with the reconquista of Al Andaluz in the 1400's.

They are at least passing laws now to punish those who still have slaves. It's a step in the right direction.

The difference between America and Africa is that America has enforced laws against slavery since the 1860s. Africa still isn't enforcing laws against slavery and it's 2007.

It's too bad I'm so far out in the boonies, the local large bookstore probably has that.

And I could sit and read it for free!

I just put it on hold at my local library. Did it online and they'll send me an e-mail when it gets returned next.

I must be getting jaded in my old age, but this just doesn't surprise me any more. Western civilization used to pride itself(rightly or wrongly) on it's high moral standard, yet from argueably the 'beginning of Western Civilization' starting with the Ancient Greeks right up to today, slavery in one form or the other has always been with us. Be it wage slavery, sweat shops, or outright human bondage, it's always been there. So much for 'high moral standards'.
I'd say it's rather likely as things unravel, we'll be seeing more of this. :(
