Computers are not only a pleasure but a tool. Having one with a battery is useful when the grid is temporary down. Although they're more useful if they use a Unix (Mac) or Unix-like (gLinux) OS. Windows is crap, and a computer that is virus-prone is not useful at all with intermitent Internet (for security updates and antimalware updates) and electricity. Computers should not fail so easily and should have good performance in a long emergency.

I only have my computer and I getting rid of it for a laptop, so that I can be more mobile.

I don't own a cellphone and probably never will

The only thing I try to be mindful of is that the servant doesn't become the master.

Kind of like the lady whose battery on her keyless entry ran down and she didn't know how to get into her car.

I'm not a Windows fan-boy, but I do think there is some good in Windows and Microsoft, just as I think Linux is also great. They are separate environments and serve generally separate purposes. For enterprise computing, you'll be hard-pressed to beat a Linux machine. However, when it comes to the desktop market, Windows will always be on top. Sure, MacOS is gaining slight market-share, but it will never compete with M$. And Linux as a desktop computing solution is a joke.

As far as viruses and security holes, most Windows security problems come from IE. If you use Firefox, your security problems will be almost nil.

Guilty pleasures I have...

I love my portable music player (never sold out to the iPod crowd though). I have a cellular phone (but none of that fancy Smartphone/Blackberry crap). Video games are always fun (still have a great time with my original Xbox), and I'm frequently on my PC.

The Prius (which I drive) has a hidden mechanical key on the FOB. So I will still be good even if the battery runs down before I can get to the spare.

I have a cellphone and a Dell XPS gaming laptop. Also, I'm plugged into my dorms super-fast network connection (I got 2.5 mb/s one time and download a 2.2 GB file in about 17 mins hehehe).

That's it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Hawkcreek', 'I') really like my new wheelbarrow. It sure beats carrying the load in my arms, or on my back.

Does it have one of those fancy new round things up front?

Don't know if these count as high tech...but I really don't feel guilty, they are 'tools' as such that I can't make myself but use everyday:
My Bike,Leatherman Multitool,the computer I'm typing this on,microwave,fridge,stove,etc.
If you mean things like, cell phone, blackberry,mp3,etc...don't have em, don't need em. Just toy's we've been convinced we can't live without.
Been recently reading Thor Heyerdahl's - Fatu Hiva Back to Nature.
He and his new wife moved and lived on this Marquesas island back in the '30's. Lived like the native's with only a steel machete...no guilty technology pleasures there...only true living, good and bad.
I think the age of 'guilty technological pleasures' will be winding down pretty soon.
Cheers

I'll tell you what my #1 guilty pleasure is: The Internet and cheap delivery that enable impulse buys. You mentioned that book, I thought it sounded good, I opened another browser tab to Amazon, found a hardcover copy in "very good" condition for $.95 + shipping still = less than $5, and a few more mouse clicks and it's on the way to me.

I sure will miss that kind of self-indulgence.

FoolYap, you're post made me chuckle. :) Used to do that too. But I got rid of my credit card and now go to a used book store instead.
Good price for the book btw. It's an interesting read, enjoy.

I really like my Outback MX60 charge controller on my PV system. It consistently improves the output of my PV array by 10% to 30%, in addition to saving me money on the cables needed to bring power from the PVs to the MX60 and the batteries. And the newer electronic controllers for electric vehicles are a great improvement over the older multiple relay/multiple voltage controllers. Digital cameras have turned out to be lots of fun, too, and really useful for quickly sending pictures to anyone with an internet connection.

Wrong, Windows computer are prone to worms that infect the computer by merely being conected. If you want to say such fragile environment is the best for a consumer OS, then go ahead! just don't call any of us Unix users when your machine breaks.

I can't think of any technology I feel guilty about using, because I'm hardcore for conservation and have made it work.

I've built a bunch of sustainable technology here including my fridge and a graywater recycling system. I've gotten my energy consumption down to the point where, minus the fridge and one or two small things, I'd be down to approximately Cuban levels of electricity usage, which are sustanable on a planet with 6.5 billion humans.

My typical electric bill is 110 KWH/month. The fridge uses about 30, the PBX (phone system) which is mostly a work requirement, is another 10 KWH/month. Minus those two things: 110 - 40 = 70, and sustainable Cuban levels are 72 KWH/month. In order to do this I'd have to be eating in a common dining hall situation or otherwise communally, which doesn't exist in the neighborhood (aside from eating out all the time, which I can't afford). And I'd have to reconfigure my home phone lines as well as work line, to run on the PBX downtown, which is doable and may be done soon.

I've got my driving down to about 400 miles/month, 90% of which is for client site visits and 10% is purely personal trips. I piggyback items such as grocery stops, on the way back from client sites. The monthly meeting of the sustainable community planning group is another 150 mile round trip but we carpool.

I have a 9" black and white Panasonic TV (1978 and still works like new), and in fact prefer TV in black and white most of the time: there's something retro-cool about the quality of the picture, and of course the power consumption level is about 15 watts. (I'll get a digital adaptor next year, probably another 3 - 5 watts.) In any case, I watch about 4 - 6 hours a month so that's not a big deal.

I don't have a cellphone or an iPod: no need for either.

Computers are laptops: MacOSX, WinXP, and one of those OLPC machines ("the hundred dollar laptop" which required a $400 donation to get one in December). We have an OpenSource server on the rack downtown for work purposes.

I've "sinned" a few times recently. I now have an MP3 player, to make jogging more fun. I also had an Internet connection installed in my apartment, and they threw in three free cable channels. I chose Turner Classic Movies as one channel. Connie Francis helped get me through a recent bout of food-poisoning, otherwise I don't watch the boob tube. I have a cellphone but no fixed-line. I haven't had a fixed-line for years now.

The 1991 Glastron Bowrider ski boat is (was) my most guilty pleasure. In my defense, I bought it in 1998 right about the time I became PO aware. And due to some electrical problems, I haven't had it out to the lake since June, 2006. It is a 4-cyl Mercruiser inboard. I may sell it and get a sailboat, because in Texas summers, it's nice to be out fishing and swimming.

<--does not own a cell phone, or other mobile device
<--does not have any game consoles

The digital camera I bought last year I think is an energy-saving device (compared to a conventional camera) since the pictures require no chemical processing.

I need a new wheelbarrow too.

I have a home phone and an office phone. I just don't understand why people feel they have to be "connected" 24/7.

To each his own.
