I'm trying to say that I'd pick the first person I found who was qualified enough to do the job, regardless of appearance(if it had any influence at all, it would be nearly zero). I'd know what order the candidates were interviewed in by default of having interviewed them. I might even find the person wearing the ripped jeans to be more 'likable' by default of not being too concerned about maintaining appearances. He's there to do the job, not to ass-kiss to the boss.
As a side note, a con man can wear a fancy suit just the same as anyone else can. Someone being well-dressed merely tells me that they are well-dressed. It doesn't say anything else to me.
I realize in the real world, that people are not at all likely going to be inclined to select the way I would, for whatever reason. The guy with tattered jeans is less likely to get hired. To other people, dress does say something.
