Do you wear ripped jeans?

Unread postby jesus_of_suburbia_old » Sat 01 Mar 2008, 06:39:41

Let me start off by saying I am not a douche bag hipster.

I was visiting with my grandma the other day. She had commented on the horrible condition of my jeans. I was wearing ones with holes in both knees, frayed pant leg cuffs, a rather wide rip along the back waistband and the back pocket half torn off. I love them. I bought a three pack of boxer shorts with polka-dots because they were on sale. I always make sure I wear the red pair with these jeans. You know, just to say "fuck it". I know these are in terrible shape but I hate having to break in new jeans.

My grandma had said that even when she was around my age (22) she would have tossed them out. The funny thing is, she grew up on a farm during the Depression. You'd think she wouldn't have cared.

Anyone else have trouble parting with a pair of jeans?

Still wearing a pair of jeans i brought for £1 3 years ago even though they have several holes. Did just get a new pair for £1.50 at a car boot though. Its not being cheap, just frugal...

The way i look at it is i save money buying them cheap, save money not throwing them away and get use to living with less.

Ha, my parents used to say the same thing until they grew too old to care. I wear them less than I used to but I do wear holes in them pretty quickly so yes, I wear holy jeans. I had a girl a few years ago ask me if i was going for 'the bon-jovi look' and that gave me pause, but screw it.

When I was in high school one of the rules in the student handbook was that blue jeans had to be "completely in one piece."

Since I assume that every rule is in response to some violation at some point, I always wondered what the jeans that were in more than one piece looked like.

Perhaps it was cut-offs with just the bottom couple of inches of the severed pant legs pinned to the socks.

I wear tattered jeans, from when I was still in high school. I never yet saw a reason to buy new ones and I don't give a shit what others think about them. I'd prefer not to spend the money on a new pair, which would go directly to the coffers of some rich investors that sweatshops in El Salvador or Bangladesh and pay their employees less than 2% of what they're worth.

One pair I have is ripped. Once I get the materials, I'm patching that shit up.

If I ever need new ones, I'm going to the thrift stores. I see no reason to pay $50 for something I can get for $5 and possibly for free. Better yet, I'd like to learn how to make my own, if that would be possible.

Still looking for work in my field, I'm broke as hell anyway!

I have a couple pairs of ripped up jeans that I have patched up to one extent or another for garden work.

I think I have mentioned it, but I could list the amount of "new" clothing I've bought in the last decade. Padded cycle-shorts (which I wear under baggy gym shorts) probably constitute the majority. I do frequent thrift stores wherever I travel and visit any garage sale within a mile or two of me. I do think jeans (and everything else) last longer when hung out to dry, not run in a tumble dryer. I do sew some, mostly for repair. It's simply not (yet) worth the bother of sewing full outfits when Goodwill is chock full of clothes.

In warmer weather at home, I've been wearing more sarongs. Not yet brave enough to wear such to work, although it is a comfortable, honorable, and modest clothing option.

If they were made of hemp, this wouldn't be a problem. But, that's just too durable for the textile industry, and not conducive to promoting good little consumers that will keep on buying due to a pre-designed product life.

Hanging them out to dry works very well. And saves electricity to boot.

I'm all for living a bit frugally.

However, I wont look like a shit eating bum in doing so.

Have at least a modicum of pride in your appearance man.

Do you realize there was a time when a man wasnt considered fully dressed if he wasnt wearing a hat? And I dont mean your favorite sportsteam ball cap, I mean a proper hat.

While I dont give much thought to a hole in the knee it sounds like your pants just scream "I'm a bum".

I wont need the sopabox anymore, someone else can use it now. But appearance is a bit of a pet peeve. At least act like you have a small, tiny amount of dignity and self respect.

It appears ignorant for members of society to judge others on what they wear.

I have enough dignity and self respect to realize that my clothes don't mean jack shit in regard to who or what I am.

I understand the importance of looking 'presentable' when the situation calls for it(eg. job interview, and to obtain said job), but I do not understand why people are so quick to judge others on appearances.

One of the most well-amnnered, intelligent, and dignified people I've ever had the pleasure to meet, was a morbidly obese man who rode around town on an antique bicycle in his underwear.

He ran a small business and it was quite a well known fact among the locals, hardly a bum.

I tend to buy sturdy clothing that lasts a long time. But it still hurts to throw something out. It feels like such a waste.

I'll take it for a minute.

Clothes Make the Man is not a new construction but regardless of lyrics, I'd wager is alive and well in the minds of those that make a difference. If the opinion of folks like your grandmother don't matter then wear your cool boxers on the outside.

Or better, if you were real you would just tell Gram: "Fuck it!"

But if you want to be taken seriously, you need to pay some little attention to your appearance just as Granma pointed out - at least in social situations.

I have some jeans you would love - they look like tattered screenwire.

I have a new pair I wear to town or to visit.

Here is another way to think about it:

If you needed to hire someone to do a job (and the job did not involve designing stylish jeans), and two equally qualified people applied for the job and one showed up for the interview in pants with no holes or tears and the other person showed up wearing jeans with holes, rips and tears, which one would you hire?

You can't ask for more information. All you have is the information above. And you must make a decision. Which one would you hire?

Why did you choose the one that you chose?

When I was a teenager I had long hair, which I thought was cool. However, it cost me a lot of opportunities because some people don't react well to that kind of thing. Thus, my individuality cost me other things that I might have also enjoyed. That was my choice, but there was a cost.

No matter how cool you are, opportunities do pop up unexpectedly and out of nowhere from time to time, and it's good to have some decent looking pants on if you find yourself in one of those situations.

The closest I have ever come to a million dollar opportunity occurred while I was reading a book in a Starbucks by myself one day. The people at the next table asked me about the title and it opened the door to a very lucrative opportunity. I wonder if the same opportunity would have presented itself if I had been wearing torn up clothes.

To wear ripped jeans or not, so many perspectives.

I have a few ripped jeans. I wear them when gardening. Sometimes I have to ride my scooter a few miles to get to the place I'm gardening.

If I stop along the way .... heh... well, I look like a complete bum and people keep a certain distance.

I can't say with certainty which I would hire in a hypothetical situation(I'd need to actually BE there), but I'd be more inclined to hire the person who first contacted me for the position. The one who applies earliest may be showing more initiative.

You broke several of the rules. Read them again.

Are you trying to say that torn up jeans wouldn't influence you in any way?
