I've been looking at my copies of Hubbert's Peak, The Party's Over, Powerdown, and my End of Suburbia DVD wondering if spending the money to give all of my local libraries a copy of each would be a worthwhile contribution or if they would sit there being ignored. After all no one would look for such materials unless they were Peak Oil aware already.

I also wonder if any of the publishers would offer a discount for a large numbers of copies destined for donation to libraries.

Any comments?

I was thinking about that this morning .

I'm not sure it would be worth it. I have a feeling that they would sit in a back corner, unread. I suggest giving them to family and friends first (but I'm sure you already did that). Unless they were in a visible place, I don't think anyone would bother reading them.

My university library has a copy of "Hubbert's Peak." Surprise! I think that once this issue becomes mainstream, the libraries could make good use of the peak oil-related books.

Check with your librarian first.

Libraries receive lots of donations. Many will review the books lightly before putting them in the book-sale boxes. People want to help, but the librarians end up dealing with the oddest collections of bad or outdated books. The library has a limited supply of shelf space, and each new book requires a few hours of processing plus pocket, cards, theft-tag, etc.

I have donated PO books to two libraries. In each case, I checked with the librarian first. One had some PO on the shelf and added what I donated. The other did not yet have PO and was willing to add.

It could be that you meet a librarian that thinks PO smells like Y2K and doesn't want any. Don't fight too long.

Once PO materials are in libraries, they will probably circulate. Maybe a lot, maybe a little.

I was considering doing this, but I also wanted put up a little display for the library so that the books wouldn't fester on a dusty shelf. I will contact the chief librarian but your info about processing time etc is useful.

I've checked the library in Berkeley, that town is progressive, and liberal and they tend to have books to peak oil related issues.

When I checked the books are in circulation, so I'm unable to borrow it.
I've managed to find The Partys over, High Noon Natural Gas, Resource Wars, Collapse, and a ton of other 9/11 related books. If you live in a liberal or progressive town, there should be PO, and 9/11 related books.
