Will the loser become a winner and the winner a loser?

Unread postby Sys1 » Mon 18 Feb 2008, 17:59:05

I live with 2 roomates, one who is a 25 years old guy who is plenty stupid. He listens RAP all day long and watch TV. He's as dumb as angry against the society (As a black, he considers he's surrounded by racist people). He's quite tough, at least tougher than me. He got nothing to loose, he has no hope...
There's also a smart girl, electronic engineer student, who 2 hours ago asked him why he spends all his days at home watching TV. He told her it was his ambition to watch TV, and that it's too difficult to get a job. Later, at 21pm, when he started listen RAP loud, the girl whinned 15 minutes later at his door. As an answer, he put RAP louder...

If the society collapse, this tough guy could easily rape or/and kill her. Smart people could be smash by the loosers who would welcome collapse of civilization as a great opportunity to become tyrants.

I am myself stuck in this situation. Sure, i've got a soft air gun and some knifes, but if i kill him, i head straight to jail... By fist only, i've little chance to win.

I remember in Mad Max 3 the role of the black woman, proud to say : "I was nothing before the war, now i'm the chief of bartertown, i'm respected!"

I've the feeling that those assholes could take control of small and violent communities.

It is only the veneer of civilization that keeps you from doing serious bodily harm to your Rap loving roomate. In the real world with civilization stripped away he might suceed for a short time through brute streangth and terror, but if he is as lacking in ambition as you describe him he will in short order run up against someone who is willing to do him great bodily harm, and he will have few if any friends to watch his back while he rests and recuperates. Such individuals can only hope to be thugs following a smarter leader, but as such they are cannon fodder for the turf wars that would arise.

"Loser" (n.) is spelled with one "s." Loo-zer.

"Looser" (adj.) is pronounced "loos-er"

I think brains and agility are far more important than strength.

What makes you think the local police force is going anywhere?

Even if the local police somehow disappear, if there is a monster roaming around your community assaulting the womenfolk, I'd expect the locals to round up a posse and dispose of him in short order.

Just saying...

Smart people (do/will) carry guns just for that reason.

When I worked as a bouncer while I was going to college, I saw plenty of big strong guys around my size that didn't have the fighting skills or cardio to fight their way out of a wet paper sack. Many also couldn't take a punch, choke holds, leg strikes and cut easily.

In the construction industry we see a lot of big strong guys that can't handle the pace of work and don't like long hours, digging with shovels, repeated lifting, operating power tools, climbing ladders, working in the freezing cold or working in the heat, rain, sleet and snow.

When my father used to guide hunters and performed winter wilderness survival training, many of the big strong guys were the first to complain about the long hikes, blisters, steep terrain, deep snow and sub zero temperatures. Many times my father would have myself, my brothers and sisters carry the hunters gear when they were too tired to go on.

Being big and strong will only get you so far. Survival depends on a combination of common sense, adaptability, knowledge, intelligence, strength, mental/physical toughness, multiple skills, preparedness, discipline and work ethic.

At best, size confers a tactical advantage. There is no strategic advantage that I can see.

The strategist simply negates the size differential by avoiding him, choosing an appropriate caliber, or leveraging the element of surprise.

It is poor strategy that places you in a situation where you are forced to fight someone who can kick your ass.

Remember in Mad Max 3 that Blaster was vastly superior to Max physically, but it was ultimately not much of an advantage when Max opened up his can of post-apocalypse whup-ass, so the fight might be closer than you think.

Still, the best bet is just to avoid the ogres rather than try to thin their ranks.

I guess if he feels it necessary to thin the ranks of ogres he'll need a good sniper rifle, a good hiding spot, and plenty of ammo.

Anybody that lazy would be dead from starvation in no time. They wouldn't even know where to begin when it came to putting together a tyranny. Everybody they tried to force into anything would simply disappear. Your biggest worry would be the beginning, before the weakness from lack of food set in and after he was hungry. I suggest developing the skills necessary to avoid such people, like learning how to move even if you have a lease in place.
When it comes down to it, the people will always shout, "Free Barabbas." They love Barabbas. He's one of them. He has the same dreams. He does what they wish they could do. That other guy is more removed, more inscrutable. He makes them think. "Crucify him."

It isn't all bad. At least you have learned what to watch out for next time. Thank you for reminding me, btw, of how bad it can be because I am about to begin looking for a place and I want to avoid this kind of situation as well.
