Was even more special for me because my parents knew Jack and Penny Tweedy, the horse's owners. Well, they knew them a little. I was just a wee scrap so I don't know how tight the connections was or wasn't. My mom filled us in about Secretariat before the first race of the triple crown, however. My siblings and I were rooting for him before the whole thing began. It was great to back such a winner. I still say to this day that no horse was ever better. I sometimes get a little tear bragging up the greatness of Secretariat come Derby time.

No problem - with all the racists posts and doom ... I thought this was uplifting.

No I do not go to the track...I was 7 in 73...

Nice thread, rocc. Amazing horse. Watching such commanding talent is uplifting. Though not a horse story, I did witness something extraordinary once, in the same era. In 1970 I was in the county swimming finals and I watched the American backstroke record holder of the time swim. Unbelievable. He must have won the 200 by 50 yards. Two years later he won the gold at the Munich Olympics in the 400 medly swimming with none other than Mark Spitz.

It's all breeding, genetics. Some horses just end up with a really good body geometry and a good gait. Plus there are mental aspects.

This is why some of the folks get paid a lot of money to let one of their stallions do work they happily do for free! :)

Secretariat was juicing, in my not-so-expert opinion. No horse is that fast. When they autopsied him, his heart was twice the size of a normal horse's heart. I think some drugs have that the same effect on humans. Why does no one report this? Probably because there's no smoking gun. It's a conspiracy [and yes, I do know that I am now a confirmed peak oil whack-job just by posting a conspiracy theory here].

I think the whole sport is probably crooked. I remember back to when Smarty Jones ran the Belmont just a couple years ago. That was f'ed up. Coming down the stretch, it was clear that Smarty's jockey gave him the "all finished" signal and was moving out of rhythm with Smarty. As soon as the horse sees Birdstone out of his right eye, he picks up the pace--but it's too late. There is not enough track left for him to accelerate and catch up to Birdstone. I think I lost $10 on that race.
I still love to watch the horses run anyway.

I never saw the new movie about Man-O-War, and only a bit about the old one, but I read the book for kids, and I thought it was great. :o

I enjoyed the movie Seabiscuit and read the book, which was just outstanding.

I never realized how much it sucked to be a jockey. Tough life there. You grow to hate your body and abuse it constantly trying to stay at a very unhealthy weight.

Actually, what made Secretariat so exceptional was not only his physique, which was a thing of aesthetic perfection , but also his INCREDIBLE RANGE.

Put another way, in human athletic terms, he was the world's fastest sprinter, miler, and marathoner, all at the same time. Anyone one who ever ran track understands how impossible this is.

There has never been an athlete of his kind in recorded history. Truly a freak of nature.

What is truly amazing, is the amount of animal cruelty that is accepted and allowed. Those animals are not here for our sport.

I would bet Secretariate was treated better than most royalty. Horses were born to run ...and run is what he did.

ITO cruelty...

Humans were not meant to live in cities... in cells within our own prison...detached from nature...

We are cruel to oursleves we have lost our minds in our cells in our cities...like a polar bear in a zoo...clinically mad.
