What culture are you?

Unread postby Cynus » Sat 16 Feb 2008, 13:56:42

I've been thinking about multiculturalism, and it seems to me that the first question someone would ask themselves when thinking about it is "if we're going to be a multicultural society, what culture am I?" It is my perception that, ironically, were you to ask many multiculturalists “so what culture are you then? What do you bring to the table?” they would be uncomfortable and not know how to answer. That is because, as I’ve argued previously, most multiculturalists bring nothing to the table, they are consumers of cultures, not members of any cultural tradition. No matter what their background is, they are uncomfortable with self-identifying themselves as such, and do not consider any cultural heritage to be a part of their identity. They can’t say that they are Americans any longer, because under multiculturalism there is no longer any such thing as American culture, only subcultures. So out of curiosity, what culture, if any, do you consider yourself to be part of?

White.

Grew up doing chores, deferred gratification, fair play and sportsmanship and "don't be a wet blanket" and all that. Honesty. My older bro stole a 10c package of peanuts from the store - I remember him having to walk back by himself and pay the guy, and apologize. He was 6. Dad taught me how to repair a bicycle inner tube and how to work a rod and reel. You make your bed, you do your homework, and you do yard work for spending money. Some jobs are dirty but you don't turn down a job for being "too dirty" if you accomplishes your goals. You're going to college, or if you're going to be a plumber or carpenter you be the best one you can. A stitch in time saves nine. You don't toss trash out of the car window unless it's "biodegradable" yes I knew that word at age 10. You take care of your pets. You DON'T shoot the cat with your bow & arrow or your BB gun. You go places using the Buddy System and you look both ways when crossing the street. You always tell the truth.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cynus', ' ')So out of curiosity, what culture, if any, do you consider yourself to be part of?

Small town. My father and my school principal knew each other from Lions Club. My mom knew some of my teachers through Methodist Women or League of Women Voters. Either badly acted Shakespeare or badly acted Little Shop of Horrors would fill the JuCo auditorium. Municipal band in the bandshell. Best friends were a doctor's kid, a Mexican trucker's kid. About every week we went to some scout troop or some social organization's chili feed. Morning swapmeet on the AM radio. Not a road over 30 mph in town.

Of course, defining myself that way means I'm a dying breed. It's hard to overestimate the impact Wal-Mart had. My scoutmaster managed the Gibson's (discount store). He may have been trying to make a buck and wasn't selling much local fare (he tried), but he was at least a member of the community. The guy who manages Wal-Mart? Changes every six months, from out of town and hates it here. If his numbers are good, maybe he'll get promoted. If they aren't good this week, it's the axe. Lots of other changes, too, but that might be the most important.

Small town southerner. Raised a Baptist. Raised a Democrat. Became a Republican when Bill gave a whole new meaning to serving on the presidential staff. Became a diest when God let my baby girl die. Became a Mason when I found they were the only ones that would come get their brothers when the chips were down.

Southern Californian. I can get by in Spanish, eat salsa and sushi, know how to play traffic chicken with the best. Fifty mile an hour winds? No problem. Water rationing is what I grew up on, store signs in three languages don't bother me, and I navigate by the mountains.

At least I used to until I moved to Oklahoma.

I think you have race & culture mixed up. Just like Jewish is not a race.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')ulture is manifested in music, literature, painting and sculpture, theater and film and other things.[1] Although some people identify culture in terms of consumption and consumer goods (as in high culture, low culture, folk culture, or popular culture)[2], anthropologists understand "culture" to refer not only to consumption goods, but to the general processes which produce such goods and give them meaning, and to the social relationships and practices in which such objects and processes become embedded. For them, culture thus includes technology, art, science, as well as moral systems.

Vision-neegar you are right. There are whites growing up completely in ghetto-thug culture now. There USED to be blacks who considered George Washington Carver a hero (as I did) but now it's all ghetto-thug culture.

However as un-PC as it may be, there are Northern and Southern sub-species of humans, with different temperments. Deferred-gratification, fewer children, more care put into each child (white) or immediate gratification, many children, less care invested in each child. This is because of differing evolutionary pressures between the northern climes and southern.

Thug culture is killing off blacks and blacks should be the more concerned about it, but they don't give a shit, let their kids grow up thugs, that's fine with me. But I want to see we Whites able to hold ourselves separate as you folks do, and follow our own culture.

I'd guess Migrant American.

My people have been in the US for a long, long time but never more than a generation or two in one place. Personally I have never lived in one place for more than 7 years - though I want to set roots so my kids can have a place, I think at least once a day of where would be better.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

I'm of the euro blood lines.
I guess I consider myself a North American.
Culture-wise....the last 30 years has been
bike-punk-skate culture.
I guess those are subcultures...
All 3 sub c's have the DIY ethic, tend to watch out
for our own, and our general population includes
people from every walk of life.
Punk is not really a style of music. It was more like a state of mind.

Bacteria are globalists. It's a fact that they multiply and occupy at an exponential rate.

Anyway, lived in the Philippines and Saudi Arabia [Riyadh] for a bit, then came to Texas and lived here ever since. Mom is Filipino, dad is as white as they come. I guess he got lonely in the air force while stationed over there.
