Good stuff Cheshire.

I expect pellet guns to become more popular too - good for small game and birds.

Squab's something I have in mind for the future too. Basically it's young pigeon before they've flown. Once they've flown I guess they're .... pigeon lol. Used to be served in the best restaurants and was a favorite meal of Nikola Tesla.

I'm also planning to plant lots of "coyote gourd" around here, it's not bad looking while growing, the seeds are supposed to be quite a good food, and the gourds themselves should be good to make Xmas ornaments or something, hey even $1 each is big money around here.

According to the Olduvai Theory, the end of 2008 should be very interesting.

')People will start to find that all sorts of things previously considered cute and fuzzy or just abundant will be considered edible or otherwise useful. Example: squab.

Or there will be more vegetarians.

"And in the death, as the last few corpses lay rotting in the slimy thorough fair, red mutant eyes gazed down upon hunger city. No more big wheels. Fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats, and 10k peoploids split into small tribes, covered the hills high above the city. This aint rock and roll, this is ..... genocide."

True enough. Vegetation, wild or cultured, will be quite popular as people start foraging and/or planting gardens again.

My boys graduate from high school. Assuming there still are things like that around.

I don't think things are going to pieces as quickly as you all do, but we'll see what happens. I do believe that something big will happen in 2008, either another 'terrorist' incident or something around the election. In either case, it's going to blow up big time near the end of the year. Riots are likely if it has to do with the election. I could even see a military revolt, if Bush keeps abusing them like he has been.

2009 is when it's likely that the economy will start really getting bad. The foreclosures will increase, and there will be a lot more homeless and semi-homeless. People will start taking in family, living more people to a house, etc. Whoever is president (I'm thinking Obama will win) is going to need to be a good problem-solver, because this is also when the oil pinch will start.

2010? Hard to say what'll happen two years out, but people aren't going to be in good moods. There will be a lot of blaming of Bush, blaming of Congress, blaming whoever is in the White House. Unemployment will be high, gas prices are going to be high, food prices will be high, we're going to have business failures, the stock market will be in the toilet. People will start dying of stupid stuff. More riots, and more repressive reactions to them.

2011 - 2013 ... I really don't know, so much depends on how we handle the next two years. We could find 'good enough' solutions or we could be in anarchy. I would guess we'll be somewhere in between. Just think back five years ago, how things are now vs then.

The Wikipedia entry on the Olduvai Theory has a link to the latest update, it says the end of 2008, maybe halfway through 2008, things start to get interesting.

It doesn't look that bad now, unless you look at the stock market and read tickerforums etc. Oh and US banks are all insolvent. But it doesn't look bad just looking around you unless you're in Detroit or something.

But it can turn bad, very quickly. The system we live in is very delicate.

I really hope I'm all wrong but the Olduvai theory is something I believe in, very deeply. It's so poetic it just has to be true. That and Fred Hoyle's single pulse theory of civilization has been around something like 50 years.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Zardoz', 'G')lobal production down to around 80 MBPD. Gasoline at seven to nine bucks a gallon (2008 dollars) in the U.S. with chronic shortages.

Unemployment at eight or even ten percent. Deep recession with many calling it a depression. Dow Jones down to below 6000.

Sporadic civil unrest with the National Guard completely out of Iraq because they're needed here.

Great tension between the U.S., China and Russia. Growing unrest in Saudi Arabia with the House of Saud holding on by its fingernails. Near-chaos in Pakistan with the government resorting to brutal, bloody repressive measures.

Air travel industry severely affected with several carriers folding. Home building industry a shell of its former self.

Possibly a new resource war somewhere. Nigeria, for instance.

I'm in agreement with this forecast, and would add:

Gold over $3000/oz (in current USD)

Record levels of famine.
