History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme. -- Mark Twain
Let's say for the sake of discussion that this fall we are voting for either Mr. Obama or Mr. McCain.
The campaigns are hard fought, but suprisingly civil. On election night, the results are too close to call. In fact, some networks mistakenly call some states for one candidate when the other candidate wins.
Slowly Mr. Obama pulls ahead of Mr. McCain in the popular vote, but the Electoral College is dead even. Finally, there is a state that puts Mr. McCain over the top. Mr. Obama does not concede the election but requests a recount because news networks are reporting voting irregularities in that state. There are rumors of everything from electronic voting machines not powering up to being hacked.
The recount takes weeks to complete. Controversy grows around the country. Obama supporters feeling disenfranchised take to the streets in protest. Finally, the state officials report that Mr. McCain won the state.
Mr. Obama's counsel appeals the matter the to the United States Supreme Court after the state court ruled in favor of Mr. McCain. Obama's campaign asks its supporters to continue to believe. While the Supreme Court hears the matter, protests turn violent in many major cities. State govenors call in the National Guard to quell the violence.
Finally, the Supreme Court delivers its verdict. Mr. McCain will be the next president.
What would Barack Obama do?
