last WWI veterans are dying

Unread postby Bas » Sat 26 Jan 2008, 07:52:07

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he man believed to have been Germany's last World War I veteran has died peacefully at the age of 107.
Erich Kaestner, who at 18 was sent to the Western Front but served only four months in the army, died in a Cologne nursing home, his son said.

The death on Sunday of Louis de Cazenave, France's second-last World War I veteran, made global headlines.

BBC: Germany's 'last' WWI veteran dies

not sure what the significance of it is but it struck me as such...

Wait until the last WWII vets die, there are already large portions of the US schoolchildren who think the US + the Nazis fought Russia in WWII.

well, that will probably more than 30 years from now.....US and the Nazi's fighting together....right...I see how a 6 year old could make that mistake though, mixing up the cold war with WWII but after some history classes in elementary that should be clear enough I think....

Well, I find it interesting that the US produced a ton of movies and books essentially glorifying the nazis. Also, Nazi imagery and US imagery, uniforms, ranks, lots of eagles, etc are surprisingly alike.

Yes, basic history taught in school would cure this, but I went to typical US public schools and I can tell you that according to them, WWI and WWII never happened, the Great Depression never happened, etc. So kids are pretty much left with what's on TV, in comic books, etc.

Schoolhouse Rock is the only reason I know a few grammar rules.

An educated populace is what the Founding Fathers wanted, but not what our present usurper gov't wants.

Last night I decided to watch Leno and he did that Jay walking skit where he talks with people on the street. It was all high school students this time. He only asked them geography questions. difficult things like how many oceans are there, name 1 of the great lakes, when in florida what ocean are you at, where is the panama canal...

Every single one of these questions I would have known by grade 5 or 6 except for what do you call people from denmark. I'm not sure if it's danes or danish... But these kids were morons. the reason he decided to do this was a study found that 11% of us highschool students couldn't find the US on a world map...

Never underestimate how poorly the education system is doing in some areas.

Those are the same people who a couple of hundred years ago would have been unable to read or write and would often never leave the area in which they were born. Those same people today can read road signs and they can do basic math in order to decide how much stuff they can buy. They enjoy John Grisham novels and USA Today. Most of them know what city and state they live in, and many of them can name three or more U.S. Presidents.

By what standard are you measuring people? I would say the serfs have come a long way compared to the elite (though some have clearly come further than others); the elitle were highly educated then and are highly educated today.

yes Bigtex, apparently "smart" people are not smart enough to realize that some things just don't stick with some people while they can still be good people, workers etc.... Not being able to point out the US on a world map is a bit worrying though.....

back to the scheduled topic now?

Alrighty then, my maternal grandfather was a WW I vet, he passed away in 1943 from complications from being gassed in France in 1918.

Wish I could have known him, sadly my mother was only 14 at the time.

that's pretty impressive. You hear alot about WWII veterans from people but not so much from WWI. Holland was neutral in that war being pressured from all sides and the economic situation was understanbly dismal but yeah, there is a lot to be learned from WWI and it's causes and it's bad and in another way good that the memories of the horrors of the trenches are finally passing away; they have been well documented though and hopefully well enough for those horrors never to repeat again.

I had three great uncles-brothers- in the Great War. The youngest was 18 when he enlisted in the Kaiser's army. He died when the war was about two weeks old. He never saw France. The middle son died in the worst battle of all time, Verdun, in which there were about 1 million casualties. The eldest had the job of driving a horse drawn wagon. He died in an artillery barrage while supplying the front, two days after the Armistice was signed.
