I just subtlety said something about the amount of tax dollars (or lack thereof) I pay. Obviously it went in below the radar.

Well, my post went under the radar too. It was the game that launched Fisher as a prodigy:

QF1!

Didn't anyone see the beauty of it? He was 14 when he won that game.

It's well to recognize the dead for the best things they had been and had done when alive. Especially when the corpse is still warm.

It was great. Moves like that are what make chess worth playing.

I think he was great for the game for a short time but with celebrity comes responsibility. Not that that means much in these days of Britney Spears & Paris Hilton but still, he should he swallowed his pride a bit and kept at it. No one is at his prime forever, no one is perfect but if his loved the game was stronger than his fears he should have stayed. He disappointed alot of people & probably himself as well.

He had a gift but ultimately what makes a person is who they are as a human being not just their talents.

He should be remembered w/ some compassion both for the best of his talents & his human frailties. Hero worship at the expense of a full picture (especially for all the wrong reasons - wanting someone to mirror one's own hate [I wouldn't be surprised if greenworm couldn't even play the game]) is unhealthy.

I think Karpov put it best (see :17-:19).

Ethical to pay taxes.

That says it, with a good dash of pepper.

The only reason I pay taxes is to stay out of jail. 90% of the money is wasted, blown up, or transferred to the rich.

Fischer engaged the bastards. He took the hard road, not the easy. He could have had a luxurious life, marketing himself USA-style and taking baths in the orange juice he loved.

Good point Heineken... he could have dies very wealthy and probably lived longer if he had sucked up to The Monster. One must give his credit for that.

I don't recall anyone in this thread saying it was ethical to pay taxes. Just that avoiding them is not, in & of itself, make a person a "hero".

If it did then perhaps I could consider myself a hero for lifting from Walmart.

Heroic is about serving others. Avoidance of taxes is not serving others (unless you wrote a book about it).

The book "Radical Simplicity" is in most decent bookstores, buy it cash, and read read read.

The way to kill TPTB is to drop out of the money/debt system as much as possible, and to live well on little enough to avoid paying at least most taxes.

You can be happier on $6000 a year than a lot of yuppies are on $60k a year, in fact most who've invested their lives in the money/debt system are fairly fucking miserable.

Not paying taxes in of itself isn't heroic. The have the ability to make tons of money and live like a yup-scum and choose not to, is heroic. That's what Merkel decided to do, that's what the Unibomber decided to do (yes I consider him to be fairly heroic although I think he should have spent his time at the typewriter instead of building dumb little wooden bombs) and so on. Remember Ted was a top-flight mathematician, who'd be earning something like $200k as a senior prof right now.

Remember the place our system has for guys like Fischer is either being a yuppie all the way and voting for Hillary for the 4th time because she's just started war on 13 new countries, or if he can't play that game, to end up muttering with tin cup in hand in front of a 7-11. Fischer held out against our system while speaking up against it for a long time.

Personally I'd rather get rich (& pay as little tax as a could). Like it or not, the richer one is the more one has the potential to do good (in this society). There are other ways of course like thru writing &/or volunteering but money is the fastest route to get anything accomplished (preserving land, building a homestead, etc.).

I respect the radical simplicity ideal, just saying fuck you to the whole game & dropping out altogether, I just like more control over my life. I've been near broke a long time now & it's not enjoyable for me (sleeping in cramped tiny rooms w/ my GF in other people's apartments, not eating as well as I'd like to due to cost). So I have to play them game.

If I had a few hundred K initial investment to build a homestead, buy animals, farming tools, solar panels, etc. I could probably live on $5K a year for the rest of my life (adjusted for inflation).

Narz you're right where the Empire wants you. "If I only had a few hundred K.." so you'll slave your life away trying to make those few hundred K, ignoring everything the Empire does just so you can get that few hundred K... you'll never get it, but you'll put in a full life voting for the biggest warmongers, helping put pot smokers in jail, anything, anything at all, just so you can get that sweet chunk of heroin, woops I mean money.

You need to go read Ran Prieur's site, do what I did and read every fucking word, even the old stuff from his zines in the 80s, Then read it again.

The Unibomber didn't need a few hundred K, nor did the Unibomber's rather saintly brother, who looked up to him. Ran Prieur doesn't need a few hundred K.

I myself would like a few hundred K, but I'm awakened and I realized I may never see a few K in the rest of my life. For most of us, a few hundred may be a huge amount of money - if you don't believe me, wait a decade and see.

So, the trick, how to defeat the Empire, is to do what you need to do without the Empire's money or at least without very much of it.

That is the mission that scares most Empire subjects shitless.

Oh, ok you kill a little less, congrats.

I am sorry for those of you that have to pay and I understand that for some there is no choice, I was in that position for some 15 years. It was hard to get out from the hands of the system, I basically had to be a capitalistic pig, so I get away from being a capitalistic pig. Unfortunately, this becomes harder and harder for a person to do as the system gets more inflated. Pity.

I suppose it was a "gimme" from Shermer, who did not see that the rook check was a game losing move. Still, Fisher saw the opportunity and capitalized on it.

You are probably right about my never seeing "a few hundred K". Unless my folks give it to me upon their deaths (but my brother will probably get most or maybe they'll put some clause on it like I have to work some "steady job" for ten years before I can touch it [yeah, they're really like that]).

I think criminalizing weed is one of the most fucked up things this country has done. Just the other day a rapist got probation. Sick sh!t.

I bookmarker the Ran Prieur website (I assume you mean RanPrieur.com). Looks interesting.

www.ranprieur.com it is.

Or if I spelled it wrong, try a few spellings and see what you get!

Narz, your parents might WANT to give you a few hundred K, but while they theoretically may have it now, that's changing fast. Everyone is invested in subprime and all kinds of exotic by which is meant dodgy as hell, financial um, products. Funny paper. I mean, CalPers and all the other pension funds, your 401k and everyone else's 401k, you name it. There's one hell of a financial meltdown going on right now 8O

So, really, it's like this - there may not be a few hundred K available to much of anyone who doesn't already have a Learjet and a place in Switzerland.

So you'll have to try to do things the Ran Prieur way and do it without having that few hundred k.

Ya, I wish I could explain that to them.

The only (main) real reason I want the money is not so I can buy mopeds & skimobilies. I just want to have some land that cannot be taken away from me (w/o killing me of course) and some basic tools, maybe a horse or two, some goats for milking, etc..
