Anyone have this game? My apologies if this has been posted elsewhere.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- On a futuristic battlefield littered with broken oil wells, burnt-out electric cars and dilapidated wind turbines, you are leading crack military unit on a mission to secure the world's last remaining oil supplies.

Your enemies are the Russians and Chinese, who are of course after the same prize.

Suddenly machine guns rattle, men are hit, the helicopter goes down, and you're in the middle of an intense firefight in Central Asia.

Over the last two decades prior to 2030 oil production has peaked and is declining rapidly, renewables never panned out, plagues hit, and starvation ensued. In other words, things have been very bad, at least according to Kaos Studios, the maker of this video game you're playing.

It was supposed to come out 1/8/08 but I believe it has been postponed until Feb to fix a problem with their MMO coding.

Another one that is coming out is a FPS called Fuel of War. Looks really cool but it has high system requirements.

I think the best "peak oil game" is Fallout 2 : old stuff, but good stuff.

Before this goes any farther, I want readers to know that I don't own any of these electronic game consoles, WII or PS2, etc, or whatever. I'm not a "gamer." I wouldn't waste my money on such crap, or should I say stuff that has no value...

I just thought it was interesting that CNN would post an article on such a game. I guess it's one way to educate some of the population of a phenomenon (PO) which certainly is not a game! Question is, will those who buy the game realize the difference between a game and reality?

Troyboy: If you had checked Cid's link, you would have learned that this game CNN talks about is in fact titled "Fuel of War'.

Thank you Twilight. I agree and should have further clarified my intent of the post.

This quote from the CNN article is worrisome:

What's the message thats being sown though....a militaristic band aid.

A generation of the future raised on an apocalyptic vision of peak oil's outcome! Profiteering in it's most virulent form.

I've played today the beta-test online. When it's loading the maps, it has quotes 'from the future'.

What they didn't realize was that it wasn't the military that would suffer the shortages, but the civilians. And so the peoples saying grew: 'Our las drop of oil will be burned by a tank'

The game is very similar to what would happen indeed, and of course you die a lot!

I was going to get it, but the rumors are that it's been canceled for the PS3. I'm not getting a 360 or upgrading my PC just to play it.

In your opinion...I see plenty of value in video games, myself. Especially the intelligent ones that have engaging stories. I doubt that you would say the same thing about a well written novel...but then again, what were probably dealing with here is a generational or cultural disconnect, because I grew up playing video games. They've had a much greater impact on me, as well as on others of my age.

Exactly. I first discovered the topic of peak oil myself when I became interested in the different methods of generating electrical power in the game "Sim City" and what the real-world science was behind them. Imagine my horror when I discover peak oil (this at the age of 15).

I think that a lot of "old people" underestimate the impact that an engaging form of entertainment can have. It just the same process that goes on when one watches a movie, or reads a book where a character express a certain political point of view, or when one hears a passing conversation in the office about current political events.

Whether one realizes it or not, each of these events have the effect engaging one's own political, economic, spiritual ect... beliefs (or lack thereof)...refuting or reinforcing various points.

If this game (and I hope it delves even more into peak oil then just a basic premise for a combat simulator) causes even one person to take the concept that the world may be headed towards one giant clusterfuck, and cause them to do something about it, then I would consider it to be a success. The fact that it may be fun in the process is only a little bonus for myself. 8)

The game has been officially canceled for the PS3 because the devs found it too hard to develop for. So I won't be getting it.

As for games being crap, a waste of time, and lacking any value, yeah that's a bunch of nonsense.

They let players choose which team to be on - American, Russian, Chinese, German, etc. That would increase their potential market.

I should add that electronic games are also a complete waste of energy too.

Someone once posted how much more additional electricity was needed to run all the Wii game consoles after they entered the market.

Electronic games being a waste of time is of course just my opinion.

Don't let my opinion stop y'all from gaming. Carry on social outcasts...

There was a Simpsons episode where one kid asks the other kids if they wanted to play "stickball'. But instead of playing this version of baseball outside where they might actually run around and get some exercise, they went to the video game store at the mall and played electronic stickball!
