As you can tell from reading some of the threads here, even at a site called “Peak Oil” there are many views. It’s quite an idea to get your brain around even if you don’t foresee “Global Thermonuclear War” and population die off as the result. It’s not so much a matter of true or false as when and what are the options – with the “When” affecting the viability of the options.
IMO, the best thing to do is read what you can and make up your mind as best you can. There is no one authority that I’ve found and the experts don’t even agree on how to gauge the situation.
Then form a plan and begin to act.
You could very well decide it’s all BS. In that case go buy a Hummer.
Maybe you’ll come down with the US government and decide the peak will be in 25 or 30 years. That may or may not affect you directly but would certainly affect your kids and grand kids. Maybe you decide to increase politician’s awareness and urge them to act before the crisis begins and encourage your kids to be happier with less in the way of consumption.
If you decide on the other hand that we are experiencing the “bumpy plateau” now, your planning might become more urgent – insulate your home, get some alternatives in place while you can afford them, perhaps stock some supplies for short-term shortages, think about providing for your families welfare over the next 10 – 20 years.
If you have specific questions post em! If we don’t know the answer, we’ll make one up.
When you decide on a plan, post it on the assessments and plans thread, there don't seem to be too many with actual plans at this point.
