Although others have already done this, I have a different idea on how to generate nearly pure butanol from waste material. Butanol is a direct substitute for gasoline, and during future fuel shortages would be an invaluable trading commodity(along with food).

If anybody knows, I'd like to know where I might buy Clostridium acetobutylicum, which is what is industrially used for the production butanol.

Well, the good news, I found a source and it's FREE!


Bad news, is I don't know how to isolate it, and it's in human feces.

So, I'm going to look into how to isolate bacteria.

you could call the extension service of your local state university. Of course once you tell them that you want to isolate a particular bacterium from your feces they might also call the nice men in the ambulance to give you a ride to the closest state hospital.

Well, I found out the methods of identification and isolation.

But now I need to know specifics about the bacteria, things that will induce optimal growth of that kind of bacteria.

So what things might make the bacteria I want appear?

I know if I add Alcohol, then only gram positive(which my bacteria is) will survive.

That will eliminate a lot of competition but not all, and it won't give me a pure sample of what I want...

Did some more reading, since the bacteria generates and prospers in acetone, and butanol, then I could put a little bit of Acetone and butanol into the culture, and other bacterias that aren't as used to dealing with it may not survive as well.

Need some other ideas to make this stuff work...

I think I'd just set up a still before I started diggin in my feces.....

You can get some pretty potent grain alcohol.

Anyways, I know jack shit about bacteria and jack left town so I'll just throw it out as an idea. Any chance of temperature isolation? If the bacteria you need survives at 180 degrees and other die off at 150 then cook your shit.

Failing that, you could check thomasnet.com. Its like a great big yellow pages for businesses and industry. Search for bacteria or chemical or something like that.
