Star wars mentality.

Unread postby bonehead » Wed 12 Dec 2007, 11:45:23

Was watching one of the Star Wars flicks the other day and it occured to me that the characters are us.In the movies they're buzzing all over the place in their pods,tie-fighters,x-wing fighters, etc. All without one mention of where the power comes from and how it's made.In the movies they're struggling mightily toward a brighter future for all,in our movie we're buzzing all over the place too,but it's not a happy ending.I don't see another Albert Einstein or Sir Isaac Newton coming to bail us out.
Gimme some demand destruction.

Neither of them or any one to take up their mantle would be of any use. They've both quite clearly stated the laws of physics, but still people refuse to believe. You can lead the sheeple to end of the world, but they'll still believe it goes on forever.

Its all just Mythology, storytelling.

I do believe that Master Kenobi was in fact living a low-input lifestyle out beyond the Dune Sea.

Now "Dune", that was something else. I lived that book the first time through. Everything that followed was crap though. Really weird. Herbert was a weird dude in general.

Great book though.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

I will lay down these powers once this crisis has evaded, i love democracy i love the republic.

If that is not a reflection of Bush i dont what is, especially with the ability to declare emergency and cancel election.

Thoughts anyone?

i was talking with the manager at a drug-testing
place. he had Star Trek paraphernalia all over his
office.

i asked him, "if Star Trek fans are called Trekkies,
what are Star Wars fans called ?"

his answer, "Stupid."

but i didn't try to nail him down. i bet he secretly
liked some parts of Star Wars.

personally, i can't stand Lord of the Rings. but,
i'm in the minority.

Yoda was living a sustainable lifestyle, too.

SW, ST, LOTR are all in the same category... "epic" films/shows for people with way too much time on their hands. I can't stand any of them.

I think Lucas might have been trying to tell us something about democracy...

I have no problems with Star Wars or LotR. Every generation desires a story on the scale of Beowulf or La Morte D'Arthur.
Only a city man would carry a bag of iron instead of a bag of rice.

The prequels probably have some good social commentary in it but since it's wrapped in such mediocre storytelling, it hardly elevates it to a high art. I feel the same way about the Matrix, at leat the two sequels. Thinking about the subtext of the movies far outweighs their intrinsic entertainment value. The best films can be both entertain AND make you think.

Maybe you're really just touching on one of the more stubborn barriers between fantasy and reality--i.e., the resources that are needed in reality to bring fantasies to life.

Space travel is so fantastically resource intensive it's going to take some LARGE leaps into unknown technology for that to ever work on a large scale.
