$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pixie', 'B')y the way, if I did not believe peak oil was here, I'd have voted for Blade Runner, and in my opinion, that's a far worse future in the long run.
But the movie only took place in Los Angeles except all the rest of the earthlings had gone 'offworld.' The movie doesn't explain why certain people were left behind

Must have missed that point. My point was just about the overcrowded cities.

No big mystery. Offworld is exceedingly expensive and generally very rigorous; either you buy your way off or work for it. Poor health and poor pocketbook pretty much leaves you off the boat. And of course, there are those who are quite content to be big fish in a small pond, as well as those who are fearful about the whole idea of leaving Earth, so many simply stay behind by choice...

I think the "The Postman" would most resemble 2050 for large parts of the Western world, but do you think that the dieoff will have advanced that far by that time?

I hope to be living the last of my days in "A River Runs Through It" territory.

Hard to say for sure, but I bet peak population will lag behind peak oil by some 5-10 years, and the two curves will mirror each other pretty closely. So, if oil production is down by about 50% by then, I would bet die-off will be about 2 billion by 2050. That's about Postman territory.

A River Runs Through It is more what I would predict for 2150, not 2050.

1984.

Doomers tend to ignore or dismiss the power of modern totalitarian governments to maintain rule even under the worst of conditions.

I think Stalin's Soviet Union is the model for most powerdown era governments.

And it doesn't even require that much energy. Herod the Great is credited as being the first tyrant with a first rate secret police that kept the general populace in a general state of fear.

And that was a long time before the age of oil.

Hmm. How about Dr. Zhivago, with overtones of Blade Runner and hints of 1984? (sniff sniff) Quite a complex bouquet!

Except for Australia, which is never that far from Mad Max.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'B')ut the OP said 2050, and I figure it's unlikely all those weapons will still be sitting around by then. That's over 40 years from now. I don't think they'll be able to maintain that level of control for that long.

This isn't a serious vote, but:

Plot summary for
Firebird 2015 AD (1981)

In one of many unpopular and unsupported policy decisions, the US government of the near future outlaws vehicle petrol in an effort to curb the overuse of limited natural resources - except, of course, for official purposes. There are many renegades who oppose the authorities, and will stop at nothing to allow themselves the freedom of burning around the countryside.

2050? Hmmm, I have to go with Hardware.
