Well, i think it would be nice to talk about music, just as a bit of light relief from the coming doom.

Some of my favourite bands are:-

Pink Floyd
Smashing Pumpkins
Jethro Tull
Sonic Youth
The Smiths / Morrissey
Jeff Buckley
Pearl Jam
Joy Division
The Pixies/ Frank Black and the Catholics
Love featuring Arthur Lee
The Pogues
The Macc Lads (be surprised if anyone knows who they are!!)

Sort of alternative, but i do like some pop as well, some classical, some old fashioned rock n roll and blues. Elvis is pretty good as well when you are in the mood!

That's my next musical goal!

My maternal grandpa played fiddle and I've always loved it.

linlithgow, what a charming name for a town. Have you ever heard Jeff Buckley's father Tim Buckley? One of my all time favorites since the 60's.
Sun Ra, Thelonius Monk and Charlie Parker - true geniuses all of them. If you like Pink Floyd don't miss their early stuff: Ummagumma in particular (1969)

regarding the Buckleys: both were successful musicians who died young: Jeff by drowning and Dad Tim by cocaine OD. Tim Buckley started as a writer of pop standard stuff, Sally Go 'Round the Roses was an oldie he wrote. Then he got into the folk scene (my favorite stuff of his) then he got into the decadent 70's LA scene just like Jenny in the movie Forrest Gump.

Most classic rock - late 60's through the 70's: CSNY, Pink Floyd, Journey, Zepplin, soo many others.

And a lot of what would probably be considered today as country - Eagles, James Taylor, etc... That stuff is always good.

New favorites include bluegrass/newgrass (Allison Krauss & Union Station, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush - and a local band called Runaway Planet - they put on a great show live (they have a website if anyone's interested -www.runawayplanet.net). I also love listening to Nora Jones. What a talent.

Actually, I love all kinds of music - I appreciate musical talent, even when I don't necessarily like the particular type of music that's being played. My nephew is one hell of a drummer - and plays what might be considered alternative rock (I never can understand a word the lead singer says :)), but I even enjoy listening to him, because he's so good at what he does.

When I play (I play acoustic guitar - have a Fender Resonator), I mostly like to play music from the second and third categories above.
