What excites you?

Unread postby Narz » Thu 27 Dec 2007, 03:28:31

What makes you feel alive? When are you happiest?

Just curious. I think it's good to think about these things once in awhile. Could have gone in Psychology I guess but figured it get more traffic here, I don't mind if someone moves it though.

[quote="Narz"]What makes you feel alive? When are you happiest?[code]

Hi Narz! Good topic for this time of year, as we what we've built, and wish in the New Years!

When am I Happiest, what makes me feel alive?

When I am in a quiet greenhouse, just taking care of my plants. But then again, just as I relish the solitude, I do love teaching classes and seeing people "get it" by what their eyes are telling me.

Spending a quiet time home with the husband, and a nice full fridge! I am happiest, and grateful, humble for that happiness.

What about you Narz?

Be well,

Blu

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('blukatzen', 'W')hat about you Narz?

Hmm, I like being awake by myself at night, either on the Internet or just laying, almost asleep thinking, w/ my girl & my cats by my side, a couple candles going (about to go out).

Also, hanging w/ friends (have moved around alot & many of my good friends I've either lost touch w/ over the years or are gone). Walking for hours in the city streets or playing board games or sitting around talking about plans. Stuff like that.

Also talking walks by myself late at night (when the crazy world is asleep), thinking, jotting down ideas on lists (95% of it will likely not amount to much but I never know the 5% that WILL). Often my cats'll tag along with me and follow me (darting off the side from time to time but never lagging behind or running ahead more than a block or two) for miles until I get tired enough to sleep and head home. I like listening to music as I walk. One of my favorites perks of this high-tech world (that & the Internet), I don't take it for granted (maybe because I didn't grow up w/ it, didn't get my first stereo tape player until 14, my folks weren't really much for appreciating music, except classical, which I didn't care for much at the time but enjoy a bit of now).

When I didn't have a woman I liked daydreaming about having one & flirting online (although usually I'd prefer the phone since online you never know for sure who you're really talking to). Now that I do I'm forced to channel my energy into other things. It's hard because I'm insecure about my skillset, my ability to "succeed" in the world, many things, except wooing women (well, most of my life I wasn't really confident in that either but I got better since I've been an adult) which for awhile was my biggest challenge/excitement.

I only had one job I really got excitement/a rush out of & that was being a bike messenger in New York. I loved that feeling of racing thru traffic, leaving cars in the dust, the feeling of eyes upon me (imagining women lusting after me & men envious when in fact people were probably mostly thinking I was a maniac :-D).

Of course there is also the intellectual excitement of learning new things (and then imagining future scenarios of using those skills or even better actually using them in some way, however small, right there in the present).

Hopefully the best excitement is yet to come. I'm kind of tired of most of it coming mostly from what I'm dreaming instead of stemming from what I'm doing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('blukatzen', 'B')e well,

Blu

You too. :)

"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling". The 'boring' five minute ride home on a 'boring' 3-speed bike is still often the best part of my day. I'm almost always happier after a ride. Exciting? Blowing down a hill at 40 mph, 18 inches off the ground on my back (I have a recumbent bike among others)... I call it "street luge", and oh yeah I hoot and holler every time.

Oh, yeah, and that moment in a flirtation or sensually tense situation when you purposely brush pinkies and get brushed back. Better than consumation, and more exciting than skydiving (IMHO).

Sitting back with a mocha and my guitar (and lately one of my darlings has taken up the guitar so playing with her is too cool). Choosing a new knitting project, or having eureka moments in writing paranormal stuff.

River rafting or hiking with buddies and beer. Cuddling with cats. All very good.

Sailing as a watchleader or assistant on One and All, with a good bunch of trainees and even better crew, 4 on 6 off watches with plenty of work to do, all troubles left onshore, decent wind and a good cook whom i have not yet pissed off!

Also

Early weekend mornings, day off work, in bed cuddled up with the GF.

I had a wonderful day yesterday hand-lining for grouper over a shipwreck far enough from shore that you couldn't see it. There was five of us on a small skiff with a rugged old-salt skipper out in a six-foot swell with a stiff breeze and a cloudy sky. Everyone was speaking Cantonese, so I couldn't understand a damn word of the conversation, but there was such a great feeling of comraderie. Being soaking wet and in physical danger made the experience all the more beautiful.

I just love being surrounded by the sea and imaging all the beautiful fish swimming around me, and hopefully catching a few.

A few other things that excite me, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and a bit of Clearance Clearwater Revival or Tom Waits for fun, all of which go wonderful with a nice, fat "cigarrette" of the special variety.

Oh, and sex always does the trick ;- )

Skiing in waste deep powder with my buddies on a cold, crisp winter day with a bright blue sky above. Steep and deep. And then apres ski beers followed by a good meal with lot's laughter and wine. That is life! ; - )

Do you go to Grand Targhee? You must go once at least before it all comes apart. 500 inches a year of powder
How to get there a lonely drive, peak ski.

This is going to be the biggest loss to me of peak oil , not being able to ride those lifts anymore. Here is where you can meet God, nearly touching the Grand Tetons in a cold blue sky, deep blue black like space since you are so high, and the lightest powder in the world.... and when you take the steep runs and cut it right you are totally under snow for seconds as the wall of white wafts over your head...

Frozen moments in time...

MrBill:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')I agree. I am never closer to God than when I worship in His temple while hiking, biking and skiing in the mountains and forests.

I am in the National Ski Patrol. I teach Mountain Travel and Rescue as well as Outdoor Emergency Care and Sled & Tobaggo Handling in Europe. We train in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Image

It kills me to be stuck in Cyprus! But I will be in France and Italy for two weeks starting this Saturday. One week in Les Orres, FR, and another in Sestriere, IT.

Image

But I am originally from Alberta, so I know the Rockies the best. We have a home in Fernie, BC. Sometimes 40 feet of fresh powder each year!

Image

I also ski telemark, ski tour and cross-country ski. So although I will miss the lifts, the exercise of hiking-up is good for me, and then undistrurbed, uninterupted runs in fresh powder!

The Grand Targhee is a dream of mine since years. But wrong Continent at the moment! ; - )

p.s. sorry about the sizing!

Doing stuff together. Just having some fun with friends, making music with family, cooking with friends, exercising with friends, cruising the car, walking through the woods... excitement is all around. :P

Very nice views, a little like Utah with those huge bowls where you are. I have dreamed of europe for the adventure too, so we are even.
Anyway, thank you for the few moments of dreams.

A bottle of lube, my hand, and some great internet porn. If you want an honest answer

Otherwise, I am also excited by watching the stock market and playing games like risk and monopoly with friends.

This new years: hanging out with friends; getting drunk, smoking some weed, hopefully getting a good new years eve lay.

Designing & building something and having it work right with minimal tinkering.

Writing. Often accompanied by a good pipe (tobacco).

Doing anything creative with good friends.

Silence & stillness.

Not necessarily in that order.

I'd have to say surfing, fishing, and walking on the beach just enjoying the day and finding stuff. Things I can't do here because there's no water, I really need to see about moving to the Republic of Texas.

Also listening to great music and maybe someday being able to play it.

and I have to say, what I call recreational sniping. 8)

Nice thread. I wouldn't call it exciting, but if you get into the right frame of mind and watch time slow down, you can watch distant trees swaying slowly in the breeze. Then there's always jayson's deal. But I don't like lubricants and it's probably distasteful to discuss this. I do have to wonder, though, if I'll live to see the time when my prostate and testicles will leave me alone. The only time I tried to defy reality on that score, and I tried hard, after about 6 months I broke out in a severe rash right in my crotch.

A little extra virgin coconut oil is a good non-toxic alternative to regular lotions.
