RUST!!! - Power Plants...Bridges and Dams...oh my...

Unread postby roccman » Wed 12 Dec 2007, 15:12:21

As we head ever more quickly down the back side of Hubbert's Peak the industrialized world finds itself in a predicament:

1) Energy is getting more expensive...

2) Skilled labor is leaving the work force

3) and the economy is about to take a dump

The question is what do we do to keep our aging rusted infrastructure duct taped together...and how do we replace this aging infrastructure with new power plants...refineries...and dams WHEN CAPITAL TO EMBARK ON THESE PROJECTS IS DRYING UP...AND FAST.

I can easily see 90% of our 40-60 year old power plants...refineries...dams...bridges etc falling into disrepair without the work force or money to fix them in 10 years.

Here is what is being reported:

“We have a major infrastructure problem in this country,” said Maureen L. McAvey, an executive vice president with the Urban Land Institute, which recently published a report on global infrastructure issues. “The civil engineers have estimated that we have a $1.7 trillion shortfall in this country alone”

and here...

The White House's National Energy Policy suggests that the nation will need a whopping 1,300 to 1,900 new power plants in the next two decades.

And with loss of capital from oil sales we get this...

Mexico's Pemex faces drying field, no funds to update refineries

It is estimated that Mexico will stop all oil exports in 2009/2011 timeframe.

So there you have it...a bucket of rust for our infrastructure...need TRILLIONS in capital infusions...no skilled work force...oh and oil is fixing to hit $250 in 2008.

What have I missed?

What have I missed?

1. Huge numbers of government indebted slaves used as labour to keep the 5% of "Elite" people in the luxury to which they are accustomed.

2. Large scale conventional war organised between the West, India and China to cull the unruly male segment of the working classes. China alone has millions of men who are currently condemned to a life of whacking the salami due to a shortage of females in the population. Meanwhile in the West we have millions of effectively useless males who are unwilling or unable to find meaningful work. India, well India is just grossly overpopulated.

Some tidbits from the report:
-Many of the plants are old and predate the Clean Air Act
-Modernization or retirement expected lifespan exceeded in many cases
-50% of the power capacity have an age less than or equal to 27 years (reported in 2000, so now 34 years)

Of course, that means 50% are older than 34 years. Most of our capacity in the 40-50 year old range.

Not that any of that should worry us.

Ain't that the truth!

It's amazing how much things have changed from the 1950s to now. In the 1950s the US and the West in general kicked ass. Space programs, bridge-building, powerplant-building, etc. like crazy. A much flatter social pyramid than now. The ordinary working-class guy was getting ahead. People had savings.

Now the whole thing's hollowed out, and 50-100 year old infrastructure will just have to do. If it doesn't then Oh Well because somehow, for every reason they can think up, it won't be fixed.

And now the 20 and 30 year olds of the 50 and 60s have left or are leaving the work force and what we are left with is the 30K Scottsdale millionaire with one $500 silk shirt in the closet...a leased lexus and an underwater mortgage - his job at the club with the ladies was "investor".

Again, people keep saying that investing in the infrastructure is impossible because it would be too expensive.

Investments in infrastructure foster long term economic growth and provide jobs that can't be outsourced. Building infrastructure is one of the leading factors in China's current economic boom.

Building bridges, power plants, electrical cables and the like is not an impossible task. People who lose jobs in one sector of the economy can be retrained and put to work in the infrastructure-building sector.

Are you seriously arguing that it is impossible to teach a McDonald's fry cook or a salesman at Best Buy how to put up power lines? Or that the laid off factory workers can't be retooled to build wind turbines and bridges?

Is the average American too dumb to do the kind of work that we did in the 1950s?

Don't underestimate people. :)

I think the general argument Tyler is that there won't be the capital going forward to fund even the required maintenance on the old infrastructure (which has been long neglected) much less tons of funding for new infrastructure.

Tyler - besides AP - you post some of the most assinine stuff here.

A guy that flips a burger DOES NOT HAVE THE APPTITUDE to be a lineman.

You really think you can fit one piece right into the vaccum of another?

And here is the true nature of how assinine your post was...

IT WOULD BE HAPPENING NOW if it were so damned easy.

My counterargument would be that capital is constantly being redistributed to the most profitable sector of the economy.

When the consumer sector becomes less profitable, investment will shift into the infrastructure sector. Private money is already moving into formerly public works projects. Basically, toll roads replace freeways.

Traveling will cost more but the infrastructure will still be there so long as somebody can make money on it.

Oh hell yeah it's funny...these jerk offs are now out of work eating ramen and living in a card board box.

Same guy that screwed grandma and grandpa into a heloc or IO are now out on thier asses.

That is funny.

Now had they stop by PO.com a few years back...they might have been able to pull their head out of their asses and maybe start a garden or a local food co-op...

Too bad so sad.

And those of us who WANTED to become engineers, nope, first it takes a ton of money to get through college and then you can't get it if you're white. So a whole generation of working-class whites who wanted to move into the middle class have not been allowed to - nope we'll just hire in monkeys* oops I mean H1B's.

*And each monkey H1B brings in his dull-chimp-IQ prearranged wife, who starts popping out kids as fast as she can, for every H1B slot we're talking 6 or 7 bodies that will have to be expelled and given the slow-boat ride back....

Lineman Apprenticeship Program

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Lineman Apprentice Program

If you enjoy traveling, working outdoors, and working with electrical equipment, then this training program may be for you. The Lineman apprenticeship leads to the position of Journeyman Lineman. Apprentices assist Journeymen Lineman in simple functions related to constructing, servicing, and maintaining TVA’s 17,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines. As your experience and ability increase, the work will be varied to include more responsible phases of line work. It is your duty and responsibility to observe all safety regulations and protect your fellow employees and the public from hazardous conditions under your control. You will be required to complete satisfactorily certain technical and nontechnical training.

This position requires extensive travel and the ability to work in emergency restorations during times of bad weather. You must possess the physical ability to climb to heights in excess of 500 feet.
Salary

Current pay for a Lineman Apprentice is as follows:

* Apprentice 1st period A: $33,095
* Apprentice 1st period B: $34,835
* Apprentice 2nd period : $38,320
* Apprentice 3rd period: $42,965
* Apprentice 4th period : $49,350

Current pay for the Lineman position is $58,060.
Qualifications

In order to be considered for this training program, a candidate should have a high school diploma or a GED certificate and possess a valid driver’s license. Previous experience in electrical work is desirable and the ability to qualify for additional responsibility and further training. Candidates are required to pass the AIR test.

The test that they are talking about consists of basic algebra, reading comprehension, and some basic spatial ability.

There is a program for power plant operations training as well. It's a 12-18 month course. On top of that, they require at least a 2 year technical degree, experience in something electrical, and a few classes in algebra, chemistry, and physics.

In 5 or 6 years, anyone who is willing to put in some serious effort could be qualified to run coal power plant. 8O

Actually it is happening now Rocc - My division (fortune 25 Power Gen company) hired over 300 engineers in the last 12 months and just started an EIT (engineer in training) program in which we are training hundreds of new grads in the most rapidly expanding industry since the .com days.

Roc - You really need to quite reading press releases to glean your information. Bechtel did a presentation at Coal-Gen international last august and showed the numbers Roc - It is very doable to hire and train a new workforce.
