Going back to the beginning question, I think homesexuality is just a "cult" and is simply a by-product of modern, secure, economically stable and prosperous living.

When the food trucks stop rolling then we go back to reality. The reality that life isnt "cuddly" and that suburbian living and modern living are as real as Disney World.

I dont think many people will be thinking about men in thongs anymore.

I can understand that someone coming from a religious background has a problem with gay marriage. - I don't, but then again I'm an atheist.

I can understand that if you are religious and asked whether you want to institute gay marriage in your country, you would answer:"rather not". - And that is fine by me.

What I don't understand is the weight these issues get during election campains.

With an election you fill in a voting ballot based on what you think is the best for you, your children, your grandchildren and your country (probably in that order). So you are making a choice for the long term. Do these people really believe that , gay marriage, abortion and euthanasia are the most important choices we have to make? More important than wars, pensions, medicare, climate change and energy security to name a few.

That is the impression that a lot of the electorate is making:"Forget the economy and all that kind of stuff, tell us your stance on abortion/gay marriage/euthanasia and we know whether to booh or to cheer you".

Are they going to look back in 25 years from the ruins of our financial system with the planet on the brink of ecological disaster thinking: "but at least we managed to save hetrosexual marriage"?

Moreover do they think that that would show God that they are prudent and mature enough to enter his Kingdom? - If I was God I would flunk the whole lot and start over again.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smallpoxgirl', ' ')As for the marriage thing, marriage is a religious ceremony. Seems to me no legitimate reason for the government to be involved in any way. Who can marry whom should be up to the religious person officiating the wedding. If your religion says you can only marry your third cousin twice removed, well I guess that's that. If your religion says you can marry a herd of sheep, why should I care. I can think you're weird and not want to associate with you, but I don't really see the point in paying a bunch of bureaucrats to make sure you don't marry the sheep.

This thing with "marriage" just a practical social thing. If society does noting at all, it will end up with a few rich males controlling all the females. It's better for the survival of the offspring of a female to have 1/30 of a rich guy than 1/1 of a poor. When a few rich males control all the females, what will the leftover males do? Simple. Band together and rape and plunder. The concept of "monogamism" and "marriage" is just a fix for an age old problem.
