I see the "doomsday" crowds simply as opposition to the "Oil is forever" society.

Of the two, the "doomsday" crowd will be right one day, at least partialy, at least in some countries at a minimum.

Then there is the optimistic peak oil crowd. I see myself on the fringe of that.

I stradle the fence, and my testies are getting bruised! think of that as a metaphor for the industrialized world.

How are we going to produce our way out of this one? That is how WWII and the "Great Depression" were swept away.

We cant do that w/ peak oil. No we will have to "do more with less."

It IS a fully survivable situation If everything comes together in correct order.

And that folks is what actualy scares me...maybe we will come to gether in "sweet harmony" or maybe we will start choking each other for the remaining oil as we are starting to do now.

Even then the "winner" of that oil is the long term looser unless they adapt. When they do that, they will loose less of their economy/society.

For me it is the them of "Peak Oil" how much of the oil age can we salvage and maybe even advance from? Of course the question has been proposed what we will advance to?

My answer is easy: MARS!

There can be some localized shitstorms, Katrina was one, but overall taking Katrina as an example, what we lost was most of a city, most of whose inhabitants left for other places that are not crashing as quickly (but are still slowly crashing) and life limps on, on the downward spiral.

What knowing about our present process of collapse does help with is future planning. Don't mess with engineering (it stopped being a valid occupation for Americans a while back anyway) and learn the trades, think about what might be needed in your 'hood if you were living a year 1900 lifestyle.

Yes! That does mean learning veterinary stuff and horseshoeing! Do it now if it interests you - tell your friends you wanna work on racehorses or you like horsies or some damn thing - they're already hitching horses etc to stripped down cars in the 2nd world, it will be standard practice here within your lifetime.

It means learning to keep animals or even raise bugs, revitalize soil with manure, conpost, and our poo, so learn to do that properly and safely now!

It means learning carpentry with nonpowered tools.

It means learning how to pickle, can, preserve, dry, etc.

It means learning art - the digital cameras won't last long. It means learning to make your own music since MTV isn't around when the lights are off.

The trades are already better things for the average working-class American to go into, but this will become extremely obvious as we ride the curve down.

Guest person , you seem to be suffering from some preconcieved misconceptions,If you look at Matt's website you'll see a lot of books on farming, self-sufficiancy, surviving in general in many different ways. Someone who was eager for the apocalypse and civilizations demise wouldn't bother with this kind of stuff would he?I mean someone who was solely focused on the negative would focus solely on the negative , wouldn't he?surviving is indicative of hope, for me , I'm here because I moved to rural GA. to be self-sufficiant and I got no sympathetic , like-minded individuals to talk to around here. As far as the gun and or depression , yes I worry about what's to come everyday but talking to my friends on this website helps to keep me focused on the work to be done and reinforces my heartfelt belief that I'm not nuts thinking my entire way of life is gonna be changing , and soon by the look of it.I'm preparing for the worst , 20 acres , three cows and a horse,3 dogs , 3 cats , 2nd season of what should be a BIG garden this year.Although the doom is always lurking outside my door you'd never know it judging by the laughter of my family on the inside.Peak oil or not we're very happy out here in the sticks.
