Huge jellyfish pack slaughters 100,000 salmon

Unread postby Keith_McClary » Fri 23 Nov 2007, 03:12:55

An overwhelming attack by billions of jellyfish has wiped out the entire stock of Northern Ireland's only salmon farm - some 100,000 fish worth £2m, AP reports.
The "dense pack" of mauve stingers, covering ten square miles to a depth of 35 feet*, last week swamped the two net pens holding the salmon about a mile off the coast of the Glens of Antrim. Employees of the The Northern Salmon Co Ltd battled for hours in three boats to a force a way through the jelly-hordes, only to find the fish already dead or dying of stings and stress.

The company's MD, John Russell, said: "It was unprecedented, absolutely amazing. The sea was red with these jellyfish and there was nothing we could do about it, absolutely nothing."
The mauve stinger, aka Pelagia nocticula, is, AP notes, well known for its "purplish night-time glow and its propensity for terrorising bathers in the warmer Mediterranean Sea". However, it is only in the last ten years it been spotted so far north, something scientists attribute to global warming.
The Northern Salmon Co, which exports its organic product to Europe and the US, now faces closure if it doesn't get emergency government aid, Russell said. ®

That was great. Nothing makes me happier than watching the wrath of nature.

We already fucked up the planet so much that there is no turning back.. Nature is going to wipe our ass out and this is just a sampling of what global climate change is going to bring about.

there's got to be an use for these things, a way to neutralize the poison in the stingers, an animal that we can eat that eats the jellyfish.

... recipe for Sesame Jellyfish.

i think Pelagia Nocticula swarms about every 10 years.

Hard to feel too sad about that. Salmon farms are an atrocity.

Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS

well, first you take off the stingers. Then you add chocolate. Or grey poupon mustard or whatever it takes. I think horseradish might do the trick.

Sorry, but it serves them right for the abomination that salmon farms are. It's no different from an insect infestation of a monocrop.

actually, horseradish is pretty good. I feel like downing a teaspoon of it. Just to pucker up my nose. But I checked my fridge, and I don't have any. Before it's too late, I'm going out and I'm going to stock up on horseradish. I love that stuff.

Having some of my heritage from Eastern Europe, my parents devoured (what seemed to me) mountains of it while I was growing up. I could not abide the stuff till I got older since so much of it was around. My father liked the hot HOT white stuff, while my mother liked the one with beets in it. In Polish it's called "Chrzan".

My mother once told me of my grandmother grating horseradish in the kitchen with the windows closed one June day. I think my grandfather may have been painting outside and she didn't want the odor of the oil/turpentine-based paint messing up her cooking.
Parakeets were popular in the home at the time and she had one, well the poor thing dropped dead in it's cage due to the odor of the chemical warfare going on between my grandfather and grandmother.

After that story I felt it prudent (in my childhood) to stay away from that stuff. However, it probably would be the "bomb" on that Jellyfish casserole.

I don't like salmon. As far as I'm concerned, this was a non-event. But if it pushes more restaurants away from wasting menu space on something I don't eat...

Go Jellyfish!!

That was my first thought - it makes "Birds" or "Jaws" (or"Pirhanas") seem tame - its "purplish night-time glow and its propensity for terrorising bathers in the warmer Mediterranean Sea".

We should sell the idea to the guys who made "Birds" or "Jaws". Whosis.

You must never had fresh wild alaskan then.

Farm raised salmon is poison, even according to FDA and EPA.

I hope this jellyfish megagang continue on to the next farm. :)
