The 'Tragedy of the Commons' -- experienced

Unread postby SchroedingersCat » Thu 22 Nov 2007, 01:53:47

I was sitting in the men's room at work the other day, contemplating dinner from the previous night, when I heard someone enter the room. Instead of the sounds you might expect, this person went to the sink, turned on the water full force and began to clear their sinuses. This persisted for at least 5 or 6 minutes.

Now came the 2 minutes of hand washing and gargling. Still the faucets are on full force. Then the use of 6 or 8 paper towels to dry up the mess.

Done yet? No. Now, this cretin heads into a stall to urinate. Plenty of urinals available -- this guy just likes to use water. Constant flushing while going. Followed by one for good measure.

Now, back to the sink for an extended hand wash and a bit more sinus clearing for good measure. This time, 8 to 10 towels were required.

A bit of math and I figure that this person used about 30 gallons of water in his brief visit. To blow his nose and empty his bladder. A month's ration in a severe drought.

How many more of these clueless morons are out there? Millions? Hundreds of millions? Probably the latter.

I can't find the words to describe how bad things are going to get.

How many?

probably hundreds of millions like you said. 99% of whom are to be found in first-world countries.

And when we are all forced to decrease our use of resources we will have to hear him complain about how much he is suffering, even if he is still wasting "the commons." If you think peak oil is bad just wait until we hit peak belly aching"

Sorry that was me. I originally went in just to drain the weasel but that toxic stink oozing from your corn-hole hit my sinuses hard. You should get that checked out or put an order in with Dr Natura. You may have one of these bogging down your shitter:

I teach high school and I am always trying to get kids to understand how to act in a resource limited world. I ask them to push only three times on the paper towel dispenser. Some of the boys insist on taking 6 pulls. Especially when I am not paying complete attention. It is going to take somebody monitoring the supplies full time, or we'll have people stealing the winter's food supply and wasting it in the first few weeks of winter.

I don't want any of these people in my lifeboat. It is going to be hard enough. I think that this is going to be the challenge of the post-peak world. To get people like Angry Chimp to work cooperatively will be a challenge. They will be a real problem. We'll spend most of our time dealing with them.

I am afraid that the doomers have a very good point.

Don't fret Revi there is nothing you can do. Those baby chimps you are trying to "conform" are wired at birth to be destructive little fucking critters. In the current environment certain destructive behaviors can be temporality modified, thanks to a rigid system of punishment for those who disobey, but in the end destruction of the life support system is the name of the game. You would have more success if you drown one of those little pricks in a turd filled toilet when the rest are watching. Fear will temporarily modify behavior more efficiently than love.

The destruction of the natural world is not the result of global capitalism, industrialization, 'Western civilization' or any flaw in human institutions. It is a consequence of the evolutionary success of an exceptionally rapacious primate. Throughout all of history and prehistory, human advance has coincided with ecological devastation.
